Lehman Center for the Performing Arts Features THE FIRE AND PASSION OF TANGO, 2/27

The power and precision of tango from Argentina comes to Lehman Center for the Performing Arts when TANGO BUENOS AIRES brings their new program "The Fire and Passion of Tango" (Fuego, Tango y Pasión) on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 4pm.  Tango Buenos Aires has become one of Argentina's great cultural exports, known throughout the Americas, Europe and the Far East as the most authentic and uncompromising representative of the Tango.

Throughout its 25 year history, the company has garnered international acclaim under the leadership of prominent musicians.  In June 1999, the renowned pianist Cristian Zárate succeeded Osvaldo Requena as music director, and Pablo Mainetti, the world's greatest bandoneon player, joined the orchestra.  In 2005 Julian Vat, Argentina's most prolific composer and leading musician, assumed the title of music director.  The company currently performs under the direction of Emilio Kauderer.
 
With choreography by Susana Rojo, this modern tango, "The Fire and Passion of Tango," features an ensemble of 25 musicians and dancers, performing to live music by Astor Piazzolla, Matos Rodríguez, Eduardo Arolas, Julian Plaza, Carlos Gardel and other masters.  The dance concert is in two acts made up of solos, duets and group pieces.  Ms. Rojo starts her professional Tango dance career in the 1980's, becoming one of the first Argentinean Tango performers touring all over the world.  She studied with tango masters Ángel Todaro, Miguel Ángel Zotto, Pepito Avellaneda, Miguel and Nelly Balmaceda, Juan Carlos Copes and Los Dinzel.  She's danced with Mr. Requena in the company Tango Sessions and has performed with many companies including Tango x 2, and on the big screen in Alan Parker's EVITA.  In Buenos Aires, Ms. Rojo choreographs "Tango A Mi Manera," plus others and in the last years, she's choreographed "Fuego Tango y Pasión."

The performance of TANGO BUENOS AIRES takes place on Sunday, February 27 at 4pm.  Lehman Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall is located at 250 Bedford Park Blvd. W. on the campus of Lehman College in the Bronx.  Tickets cost $35, $30 and $25, and for children 12 and under, $10 any seat.  Tickets can be purchased through 24 hour online access at www.LehmanCenter.org or by calling the Lehman Center box office at 718-960-8833 open Monday & Wednesday-Friday 10am-5pm (closed on Tuesdays) and beginning at 12 noon on the day of the concert.  Lehman Center is accessible by #4 or D train to Bedford Park Blvd., and is right off several major highways, including the Henry Hudson Parkway, the Saw Mill River Parkway and Major Deegan Expressway.  Free parking is available.
 
Lehman Center receives support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and through corporations, foundations and private donations.  Special $10 tickets for children are underwritten by Con Edison.
