Broadway legends Carol Lawrence and Donna McKechnie will star in a new play Girl's Room by Joni Fritz opening Friday, November 30 at 8PM at Queens Theatre in the Park (Flushing Meadows Corona Park.) Directed by Broadway's Lynne Taylor-Corbett and produced by Queens Theatre in the Park in association with Dennis Grimaldi, Girl's Room is the first play from the Theatre's "Plays A Mother Would Love" reading series selected for a fully staged production.
"Set in the suburbs outside of New York City, Girl's Room centers on a young ballet dancer about to break into the big-time but has another kind of break — an accident that could end her career," explain press notes. Donna McKechnie, who created the role of Cassie in A Chorus Line and Carol Lawrence, Broadway's original Maria in West Side Story are top cast in this charming new play about three generations of lively women and the lies that bind them together as well as the truths that tear them apart. Casting for the young ballet dancer will be announced shortly.
Playwright Joni Fritz has had productions of her work in several theatres in the New York area including Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Women's Theatre Company, What Exit Theatre and Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre. Most recently her play "First a Home" was performed to raise awareness for the plight of the homeless. Lynne Taylor-Corbett is known for her work in theatre, dance and film. She was nominated for two Tony Awards for direction and choreography of Broadway's Swing! and for two American Theatre Wing Star Awards for its National Tour. She also choreographed Broadway's Chess and Titanic.
