ON BROADWAY AT MTC'S Samuel J. Friedman THEATRE
The Other Place
Broadway premiere by Sharr White
Directed by Joe Mantello
Starring Laurie Metcalf
Previews Begin: Tuesday, December 11, 2012
Opening Night: Thursday, January 10, 2013
Three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Laurie Metcalf ("Roseanne," "The Big Bang Theory," November, currently in Long Day's Journey into Night in London's West End, and a founding ensemble member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company) stars in MTC's Broadway-premiere production of The Other Place, a riveting new thriller by fast-rising playwright Sharr White and directed by 2-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Other Desert Cities, Wicked, Love! Valour! Compassion!).
Metcalf gives a "dazzling, must-be-seen performance" (Variety) as Juliana Smithton, a successful neurologist whose life seems to be coming unhinged. Her husband has filed for divorce, her daughter has eloped with a much older man and her own health is in jeopardy. But in this brilliantly crafted work, nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs with fiction, past collides with present and the elusive truth about Juliana boils to the surface.
The Other Place had its world premiere at MCC Theater (Robert LuPone, Bernard Telsey, William Cantler, Artistic Directors; Blake West, Executive Director), opening on March 28, 2011 where it extended due to popular demand. The Other Place was nominated for two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a Drama League Award, and three Lucille Lortel Awards. Metcalf won an Obie Award and a Lucille Lortel Award for her performance in the production.
Additional casting and creative team for MTC's new production of The Other Place will be announced shortly.
MTC AT NEW YORK City Center – STAGE I
THE EXPLORERS CLUB
World premiere comedy by Nell Benjamin
Previews Begin: Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Opening Night: Tuesday, June 4, 2013
A new madcap comedy from Tony-nominated writer Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde).
London, 1879. The prestigious Explorers Club faces the worst crisis in their history: their acting president wants to admit a woman, and their bartender is terrible.
True, the female candidate is brilliant, beautiful and has discovered a legendary Lost City, but the decision to let in a woman could shake the very foundation of the British Empire, and how do you make such a decision without a decent drink?
Grab your safety goggles for some very mad science involving deadly cobras, irate Irishmen and the occasional airship.
THE EXPLORERS CLUB is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.
Director, casting, and creative team for THE EXPLORERS CLUB will be announced shortly.
