Laura Pawel Dance Company will perform the premiere of Flickers, a full company work to music by Barebones (Gene Caprioglio on guitar and Dr. 88 on harmonica), along with company favorites, tonight, March 20 & 21 at The Theater at Chen Dance Center on Mulberry and Bayard in New York's Chinatown.
The Pawel style combines choreographed works with improvisational structures in both the dance and music, along with improvised talk by the performers, who have worked collaboratively for years. Flickers is inspired by dream fragments, flickers of thoughts, memories of something you were going to say but can't quite remember.
The company will repeat last year's premiere, 3 a.m., a dance about that time of the morning - a time for nightmares, sleeplessness, wanderings, meanderings, both funny and sad. The mellow jazz sounds of the Cecilia Coleman Quartet will accompany, and feature Coleman, pianist/composer; Dave Smith on trumpet; Peter Brainin on tenor sax; and Chris Haney on bass. Two premieres from 2013 will be repeated: Tete-a-Tete, an idiosyncratic conversation for two dancers to music by Barebones; and Lost Thoughts, to electronic music by Phil Stone, creating a landscape of different energies and a shifting environment. Completing the program is Inkling, which finds five dancers caught by confusion, but trying to play.DETAILS:
