Broadway's Laura Benanti recently revealed the joyous news that she and husband Patrick Brown are expecting their first child, a baby girl, this winter.
In a new interview with
PEOPLE, the Tony nominee reveals that she suffered from terrible morning sickness throughout her first trimester of pregnancy. During the toughest days during that time, Benanti was starring in the Broadway revival of SHE LOVES ME. "It was really rough," she tells the site. "I was throwing up multiple times a day, and really dehydrated. I was barely functioning as a human."
Despite the well-known saying in theater that 'the show must go on,' Benanti has since taken her doctors advice to cut down on her busy schedule and focus on her own well-being. Although that means taking some time off, the talented actress still has a host of upcoming engagements including her debut at New York's Café Carlyle this September and a performance at Washington D.C.'s
KENNEDY Center in December. Of the latter appearance, she jokes, "They're going to have to get a crane to lift me onto the stage."
Also in the works is her first book of essays to be titled "I Stole Your Boyfriend, and Other Monster Acts on My Way to Becoming a Human Woman." The book is expected out sometime in 2017.
