The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. has reported that the week ending 1/1/2006 boasted the highest gross of any week in Broadway history, at $25.2 million, and the second highest audience capacity percentage in recorded history, at 93.9%. The gross is up 14.3% from the same week last season. Last week's capacity is behind only the week of 12/30/01 which featured a 95.5% capacity.

As compared to the week ending 1/2/05, the week ending 1/1/06 was up in all categories:   $25.2 Million to $22.1 Million in gross sales, 93.9% to 89.4% in weekly audience capacity and 288,785 to 283,923 in weekly attendance.

Out of 28 shows playing, theatre seats were over 90% filled in 20 houses with 9 of those shows boasting a capacity of 100% or better (including standing room).

Jed Bernstein, President of The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc., commented "Broadway is clearly at the top of everyone's holiday entertainment list and we're thrilled to ring in the new year with such record breaking news.

On the heels of last week's news that 2005 was the highest grossing year ever for Broadway, several shows are reporting a record-breaking first week in 2006--among them, Mamma Mia!, Beauty and the Beast, Doubt, Wicked, The Lion King, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Avenue Q and The Color Purple.

The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc., founded in 1930 and operating under the trademark "Live Broadway," is the national trade association for the Broadway industry. The League's 500-plus members include theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers in over 140 North American cities, as well as suppliers of goods and services to the theatre industry.
