The ANNE LINDBERG & JOHNNY SWING Exhibitions are now on display through February 13 at the Cynthia Reeves Gallery.

WHAT CRITICS ARE SAYING:

Anne Lindberg

"All of the compositions feature tightly spaced parallel lines that vary in density and darkness, depending on the pressure of the artist's hand. They're minimal, rhythmic and at times seem to breath, with a hands-on immediacy that flies in the face of a daily life mediated by technology and barraged with images." - Alice Thorson, Kansas City Star, January 9, 2010

"For all of its rigorous conceptualization and execution, Lindberg's work exudes an extraordinary ephemerality. She coaxes unexpected beauty from the simplest of means." Bruce Hartman, Director, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, January 2010

Johnny Swing

"It is repurposing at its best. He says he likes to 'take a worthless thing and make it beautiful.' In discarded baby food jars, he sees chairs or chandeliers. A wheelbarrow is easily fashioned into a table. Nickels compose a couch. Dollar bills become the fabric for a teddy bear or a pillow." -Kiera Scholten, ARTWORKS, Fall 2008

"If Swing has mastered the art of repurposing, then the nature of what he does has itself become repurposed. Sculpting function has morphed into making art. In a sense its function deconstructed. Undressed to the point where the piece shows only its visual appeal and nothing else, Swing large-scale sculptures are the raw impulse, the basic instinct that yields these DNA forms. In his quest to make visual inspiration, the twisting, braiding metal frays into a multitude of new directions, much like the artist's roving sensibility." -Michael Persson, "An Evolution of New Forms," Providence, 2006
