Variety reports that Frank Langella will reprise his acclaimed performance as disgraced president Richard Nixon in the upcoming film version of Frost/Nixon.
Directed by Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind) and produced by Imagine, the Peter Morgan play is also likely to feature Michael Sheen as David Frost; Sheen appears opposite Langella on Broadway (as he previously did in London). The film will begin shooting in August.
London's Daily Mail had reported that Warren Beatty was also in negotiations for the role of Nixon prior to Langella's casting. Langella is currently up for Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for his turn as the scandal-ridden Republican.
Frost/Nixon opened on Broadway on April 22, 2007 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th Street) after beginning preview performances on March 31. This is a limited engagement for 20 weeks only.
The play stars Langella as President Richard Nixon and Sheen as Sir David Frost, as well as Remy Auberjonois (John Birt); Shira Gregory (Evonne Goolagong); Corey Johnson (Jack Brennan); Stephen Kunken (Jim Reston); Stephen Rowe (Swifty Lazar/Mike Wallace); Triney Sandoval (Manolo Sanchez); Armand Schultz (Bob Zelnick); and Sonya Walger (Caroline Cushing).
Frost/Nixon recently transferred to London's West End following a sold-out run at the Donmar Warehouse. Prior to coming to Broadway, the production is playing at the Gielgud Theatre through February 3, 2007. "Frost/Nixon tackles the question: How did David Frost, a famous British talk-show host with a playboy reputation, elicit the apology that the rest of the world was waiting to hear from former President Richard Nixon? The fast-paced new play shows the determination, conviction and cunning of two men as they square off in one of the most monumental political interviews of all time," state production notes.
Langella is a two-time Tony Award-winner for his work in Fortune's Fool and Seascape. Other Broadway credits include Match, Present Laughter, The Father, Hurlyburly, Dracula and A Cry of Players. He has appeared on film in Good Night, and Good Luck, Sweet November, Lolita, Junior, Masters of the Universe, the 1979 film version of Dracula, Diary of a Mad Housewife and more.
