According to the New York Times, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, which premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in 2011 and has long been buzzed about for a New York Transfer, will open at Second Stage Theatre in October 2013. Composed by William Finn and written by James Lapine, the show currently has no plans for a Broadway run after playing at Second Stage but a transfer is a "possibility, given the talents involved." Previews are set to begin on October 15.

Second Stage Artistic Director told NYT: "I've sometimes been compared to a dog with a bone. I really thought this piece would be a perfect match for Second Stage. Whatever else was going on with the show, I was fierce about trying to get it here. I try to tune out the noise of the theater business and just focus on getting things that are right for us. This time we won."

The cast of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE at La Jolla Playhouse featured Hunter Foster (Urinetown, Little Shop of Horrors), Malcolm Gets ("Caroline in the City," A New Brain, Amour) and Jennifer Laura Thompson (Urinetown, Wicked). A reading was held this spring, which featured Sherie Rene Scott, Christian Borle and John Larroquette, though it is confirmed that the trio will not be a part of the Second Stage production.

Little Miss Sunshine is based on the 2006 motion picture by Big Beach Films and Fox Searchlight with a screenplay by Michael Arndt. The film received numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

In Little Miss Sunshine, the Hoover family has seen better days. Richard, the father, is a floundering motivational speaker, Grandpa's been kicked out of his retirement home for doing drugs, and Uncle Frank's been dumped by his boyfriend. Moody teenager Dwayne has taken a vow of silence and overextended mom Sheryl can do little more than slap on a smile. But when the youngest Hoover-energetic, indomitable Olive-enters a regional children's beauty pageant, the family thinks their luck could change and embarks on a cross-country trek chasing the coveted title of "Little Miss Sunshine." With a rollicking pace and moments of joyful abandon, Little Miss Sunshine is an outrageously funny and surprisingly touching new musical.
