In 1838, Edgar Allan Poe began a journey with a short story about the beautifully haunting Ligeia. This visionary act of romanticizing death would set forth an unstoppable path to the current resurrection of Poe's monster, the musical Ligeia.

At 9:30 p.m. on March 14, 2011, you can begin your own dark education. Onstage at the Metropolitan Room, 344 W. 22nd St., between 5th and 6th Ave., in concert form with six incredibly talented performers, including Michael Lowney (Broadway's La Cage Aux Folles), Lauren Holmes, Nick Boddington (the Wonderland Robbers), Bryan Jarrett, Susanne Layton, and Elyssa Samsel, Ligeia conjures a new genre in musical theater - the horror musical.

Forget what you know about the Sweeney guy, the music of the night, or that cute little plant that sings and eats people. Take the next step in a journey that began 163 years ago, a journey to make you fall in love with evil, a journey to embrace the darker words.

In 2010 Jade Bartlett of the Wonderland Robbers and Elyssa Samsel (BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop) picked up Edgar's quill and fulfilled his dark plans to walk the razor's edge of beauty and death. With book and lyrics by Bartlett, and music composed by Samsel, Ligeia is a combination of classically influenced music and a Victorian ghost story. Ligeia is directed by Anthony D. Pound, with music direction by Andrew Wheeler.

Ready for a musical without a happy ending, one that might come back to haunt you at night? You can always remain in a place where musicals are only about pretty people singing pretty songs. Or, you could follow the crowds to the Metropolitan Room on March 14th to draw back the curtain and arrange a glimpse into a world of obsession, beauty, addiction, and ultimately death.
