Frigid New York presents A PowerOut production: Let's Play Play, written by Ben Ferber and directed by Todd Brian Backus. The production plays Feb 18th - Mar 7th, 2015.

On the Internet, everyone can hear you scream.

What happens when it's your job to be friends with someone? When do you compromise artistic integrity for cash? Two Internet personalities skyrocket to stardom with a new "Let's Play" video game show. But when a female gamer joins them, things get ugly. And then even uglier.

Let's Play Play is about selling out, and how we use Internet personalities as replacements for real friends. It also embodies the infamously horrifying vitriol of YouTube comments and gamergate.

This new play by Ben Ferber takes an inside look at the most popular genre of YouTube videos: let's plays. For the uninitiated: Let's Plays involve a gamer playing a video game and talking over it, often pointing out cool secrets, critiquing design, reminiscing about their first playthrough, or just discussing their day. At their core, the best Let's Plays remind the viewer what it's like to hang out with your friends taking turns in Mario Kart or struggling past that Sigma fight in Megaman X.

In Let's Play Play Dresher, a popular YouTuber and video game critic, launches a new Let's Play channel with fellow, but slightly less popular, YouTuber and nostalgia enthusiast Flood. Their new channel gains popularity due to Flood's increasingly volatile demeanor, as he tries to expose corruption in the industry. Tensions rise between the pair as they navigate the balance between creating popular content and meaningful critique. As Flood points out: "We're the ones who can do some good for gamers! We're, like, their last line of defense from the machine!" Dresher hires his friend, an upcoming nerdcore rapper and editor named Bayes, in attempt to neuter Flood's unpredictable tendencies. Bayes openly challenges the community, who consistently labels her a "fake geek girl." And when she begins to make regular appearances on the show, the Internet vilifies her, intimidates her, and threatens to destroy her life.

Let's Play Play examines the fragility of relationships when friendship is a commodity and personalities are a product. It also takes a look at the sacrifices struggling young artists are willing to make for success and the things we can't compromise for art.
