As the world mourns the passing of legendary singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie, Belgian theatre director Ivo van Hove, who worked with the artist on the new off-Broadway musical LAZARUS, shared that he was one of the few people who knew that Bowie was suffering from liver cancer after the singer explained to him the reason he would not be able to attend every rehearsal for the show.
The director tells Dutch news website, nos.nl, "He told me more than one year and three months ago that he had liver cancer, just after he had been told this himself. He said that because he knew that he may not always be able to be around."
He also shared with Dutch website dutchnews.nl, "Bowie was still writing on his deathbed, you could say. I saw a man fighting. He fought like a lion and kept working like a lion through it all. I had incredible respect for that."
Bowie was last photographed in public at the world premiere of LAZARUS on December 12th, outside of New York's Theatre Workshop, at which he happily greeted fans and signed autographs.
