Broadway favorite Kristin Chenoweth is currently in Kanas City for a special concert performance, and while she was in town she chatted with the Kansas City Star about the future of Broadway. Chenoweth commented: "It's getting bigger, more expensive and more commercial. Notice I didn't say 'better.' I am a very proud member of that community, but there was a time that I miss and that time wasn't about how much money a show can make on the road."
She continued, "How about an original story somebody writes out of their heads? In the old days composers and writers used to sit around and say, 'OK we've got a star - let's write a show for her.' Now they write a show first and then plug somebody in."
Chenoweth also told the KCS that she still hopes to return to Broadway in a revival of On the Twentieth Century, but that's not the only new project she's involved with. She's also working on an original musical about the life of Tammy Faye Bakker. Chenoweth said on the project: "I think Tammy was a tortured person. "I think she was a person of God. And I think she was a funny person. … I can't wait."
