PROMISES star Kristin Chenoweth will host "A More Perfect Union: Stories of Prejudice and Power" at the New York Public Library on Monday, December 6, 2010. The event is presented in conjuction with USA Network's Characters Unite Month, New York City's non-profit storytelling organization, The Moth, and is part of a national series of five Character Unite Mainstage showcases, which launched its first tour in New Orleans this year. Denver, Seattle and Chicago are among the next stops.
Each event will feature local and celebrity storytellers sharing a true tale of overcoming prejudice or discrimination. Participants include Most Def (A TRUE MAN OF COLOR), Simon Doonan, Wes Moore, Aimee Mullins, Sirdeaner Walker, and more.
The event trains high school students in each of the five select markets to tell their own Characters Unite-themed stories. After-school workshops culminate in an all-school storytelling assembly, in order to start a dialogue about important issues of diversity, tolerance and respect. USA has also created custom school kits for teachers in high schools across the country that will include storytelling activities based on The Moth workshop series.
Characters Unite draws on the legacy of USA's original "Erase the Hate" campaign of the 1990s. In 2009, the initiative included an award-winning PSA campaign; the launch of charactersunite.com and the online Pledge for Unity; the first annual Characters Unite Award; and the first-ever Characters Unite Town Hall, moderated by NBC News Special Correspondent Tom Brokaw in Washington, DC.
