In an interview with Village Voice this week, songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez tells the story of how "Saturday Night" from the newest Broadway musical, IN TRANSIT, came to be.
On this particular Saturday night, Anderson-Lopez had just broken up with her boyfriend, Robert Lopez, and he went on a date with a friend of hers! After multiple attempts and increasing frustration from trying to reach them, she tells Voice that, "I was like, 'Channel it, channel it into lyrics,' " she recently told the Voice. She called it "Saturday Night" and the lyrics are, in parts: "So I'm totally fine/Just sipping my wine/From a box!" and then "But please, oh please, oh please/Don't be out with some slut!"
And yes, that is the same Robert Lopez she is now happily married to and writing hits with today!
Anderson-Lopez also mentions that her mission is to make the heroines she writes lyrics for weird and wonderful. One prime example, in Disney's FROZEN, Anna sings "Don't know if I'm elated or gassy!" And that "weirdly evocative language" ahs now transitioned to IN TRANSIT.
IN TRANSIT, a funny and poignant new Broadway musical, follows the intertwined lives of 11 New Yorkers faced with the challenges of city life. With a groundbreaking a cappella score by a team including the creators of Pitch Perfect and Frozen, In Transit takes you on a journey with people hoping to catch the express train to their dreams-including the stops they make along the way. Modern yet timeless, In Transit is a story about all of us, set to music that will stay with you long after the ride is over.
With a book, music and lyrics by Academy Award winner Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Frozen), James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth, In Transit is directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes, Nice Work If You Can Get It).Videos
