Will TV star Jennifer Garner be wooed by the words of Kevin Kline in an upcoming Broadway revival of Edmond de Rostand's Romantic classic Cyrano de Bergerac?
According to Michael Riedel of the New York Post, Garner ("Alias," film: 13 Going on 30, Electra) and Tony Award-winner Kline (King Lear, The Pirates of Penzance; film: The Ice Storm, Sophie's Choice) are in negotiations to star in a limited run production of Cyrano helmed by David Leveaux (Fiddler on the Roof, Nine). With Antonio Banderas as a possible investor, it would run for ten weeks beginning in October. Garner would play the beautiful and witty Roxane, who is loved by the long-nosed Cyrano, who would be played by Kline. Cyrano, although unwilling to court Roxane for himself due to his appearance, nonetheless expresses his love to Roxane by writing romantic verses to be recited by Christian, who is also in love with her.
A dozen productions of the 1897 play, which is written in verse, have been mounted on Broadway, and such luminaries as Walter Hampden, Jose Ferrer, Ralph Richardson, Derek Jacobi and Christopher Plummer have fitted on the false nose and panache of the title character. There have also been several musicalizations and contemporary adaptations of the enduring love story.
"Kline's been spotted at a Silly Putty factory on the Upper West Side, trying on proboscises of varying lengths," writes Riedel, although neither Kline or Garner's involvement has been confirmed.
