Kirkland Arts center presents STEAMBOT, an exhibit curated by Cable Griffith and Genevieve Tremblay, featuring the work of Rebecca Cummins, Pat Gallagher, Rusty Olivier, Randy Moss, and Simon Winder. The exhibit runs October 15 - December 3, 2010, with an opening reception on
Thursday, October 14 from 6 - 8:30 PM.
STEAMBOT is a collaborative exhibition, featuring artwork that combines both current and Industrial Age technologies. Through a juried process, five artists, programmers, and fabricators were selected to create an exhibition that collapses time between the cutting edge of today and the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the past. Steambot bridges the worlds of art, technology, industry and history, through the spirit of interdisciplinary exploration.
Using the historic Peter Kirk Building as a starting point, the artists have developed partnerships, researched histories, shared resources, and combined skills in pursuit of a technological optimism, much like the early days of Kirkland. Soon after ground was broken for the Peter Kirk Building (current home of KAC) in 1888, dreams of building a "Pittsburgh of the West" were thwarted by a global economic collapse in 1893. Despite similar challenges today, Seattle's Eastside is home to a highly innovative, creative, and tech-oriented community. As innovation often occurs in social and collaborative environments, Steambot was conceived to provide enhanced opportunities for cross-pollination and knowledge sharing. Five skill sets became one, suggesting that Cummins, Gallagher, Oliver, Moss, and Winder are STEAMBOT.
STEAMBOT made possible by a 4Culture 2010 Arts Projects for Groups Award and the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation. Steambot Juried by James Coupe, Susie Lee, and Yoko Ott.
Kirkland Arts Center is located at the corner of 7th Avenue & Market Street in Kirkland. Hours for the Kirkland Arts Center Gallery are Monday through Friday, 11 AM to 6 PM; Saturdays, 11 AM to 5 PM and second Thursdays until 8 PM. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public.
