The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Kenny Leon, director of "The Wiz Live", "Hairspray Live" and a Tony- winner for his revival of "A Raisin In The Sun", has teamed up with Robert Horn, book writer of Broadways' '13' the musical, and Disney's Teen Beach Movie musical franchise, and Matt Claybrooks (Everybody Hates Chris) to do a reboot of the 1976 hit movie CAR WASH for ABC television network.
The reboot is described as a "workplace comedy that explores the family we build in order to survive - as seen through one kid's determination to create his own destiny, one man's struggle to accept who he has become and the bonds they form at an iconic Hollywood destination: Deluxe Car Wash."
Leon is currently attached to direct the pilot. Should the reboot move forward, he is also slated to executive produce.
Leon won the 2014 Tony Award for the revival of "A Raisin in the Sun" and became only the third African American to win this award. He was the first African-American director to have two shows running simultaneously in 2011 with his productions of Katori Hall's "The Mountaintop" and Lydia Diamond's "Stick Fly." Leon received the Julia Hansen Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Drama League of New York in 2010. Leon's next project is NBC's "Hairspray LIVE!" which airs December 7, 2016.
