Kelli O'Hara will leave romantic Florence for a strike-ridden pajama factory on December 4th. The Tony Award-nominated star will depart The Light in the Piazza to begin rehearsals for the upcoming revival of The Pajama Game.
O'Hara has been cast as feisty Babe Williams in the musical, which will be produced byJeffrey Richards
and James Fuld, Jr. and Scott Landis in association with the Roundabout Theatre Company. Kathleen Marshall will direct and choreograph the musical, while Harry Connick Jr. will star opposite O'Hara as Sid Sorokin. The Pajama Game, with a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and a book by Abbott and Richard Bissell, concerns both a battle of workers and bosses in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, and a battle of the sexes between Babe and Sid. The show begins previews on January 19th, 2006 at the American Airlines Theatre.
The role of Babe is quite different than Clara Johnson, the mentally fragile and lovestruck young woman who O'Hara currently plays in The Light in the Piazza. No replacement has been announced for the role. The musical, which won six Tonys including Best Actress in a Musical for Victoria Clark and Best Score for Adam Guettel, has extended its run through March 26th, 2006. It was first extended through January 1st. With direction by Bartlett Sher and a book by Craig Lucas, The Light in the Piazza also stars Clark as Margaret Johnson, Aaron Lazar as Fabrizio Naccarelli, Chris Sarandon as Signor Naccarelli, Patti Cohenour as Signora Naccarelli, Sarah Uriarte Berry as Franca, and Michael Berresse as Giuseppe.Prior to The Light in the Piazza, O'Hara appeared on Broadway in Dracula: The Musical,Sweet Smell of Success, the Roundabout revival of Follies and Jekyll & Hyde, and was seen off-Broadway in My Life with Albertine.
