Judith Shatin's BLACK MOON to Make World Premiere with American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall

On Friday, October 28 at 7:30 PM, the American Composers Orchestra (ACO), George Manahan, Music Director & Conductor, will premiere Judith Shatin's Black Moon, for orchestra and conductor-controlled electronics. It was commissioned by Carnegie Hall and ACO for this program, called Orchestra Underground: Contempo-Scary, and will be presented at Zankel Hall @ Carnegie Hall, 57th St. & Seventh Ave. in New York, NY.

Black Moon, for conductor-controlled electronics and orchestra, will be performed utilizing Kinect, a motion-sensing input device commonly used in Xbox video-gaming systems to sense the conductor's motion and allow him to move sound around the space. A footswitch gives him immediate control of the electronic sound cues. The piece was developed through ACO's coLABoratory "R&D" program, which provided the opportunity to workshop the piece with the orchestra last season. The concert includes Bernard Herrmann's Psycho Suite, David Del Tredici's Dracula, and the World Premiere of Paul Moravec's The Overlook Hotel Suite from his opera The Shining, commissioned by the ACO.

Judith Shatin's music is renowned for its dramatic shape and imaginative blending of acoustic and digital media, as well as her work in each. Orchestras that have performed her music include the Denver, Houston, Virginia, Illinois, Knoxville, Minnesota, National and Richmond Symphonies.
