Joyseekers Theatre Presents THE LOWER DEPTHS, 3/25-4/7

Joyseekers Theatre brings Russian playwright Maxim Gorky's classic play, The Lower Depths, to a contemporary American audience in a brand new adaptation by Australian playwright Tim Redmond, running March 23 – April 7 at the Connelly Theatre, NYC. Set against the backdrop of 1930's depression-era New York, Redmond draws parallels between pre-revolution Russia and a country quickly losing its grasp on the American Dream.

"I was struck by the relevance of Gorky's play in the context of the current economic climate. The play's themes of hope, survival and change are universal, and in bridging the gap between Gorky's world and ours, I chose the Great Depression as a backdrop, hoping to stir up echoes of a not-so-distant past" says Redmond.

Launched in 2011, Joyseekers Theatre is a Manhattan-based theatre company dedicated to producing plays exploring the fears, struggles and joys of what it is to be human. The Lower Depths is the company's first full production and features the following cast and creative team:

Jeanne Slater* (Broadway: Tartuffe: Born Again), Pete McElligott (BACKSTAGE '2011 Memorable New York Stage Performance' for Johnny Johnson), Marie Claire Roussell (These Seven Sicknesses, The Flea), Michael Broadhurst, Robert Eigen, Leah Gabriel, Evan Griffiths, Matthew Healy, Kender Jones*, Jeb Kreager*, Avé M. Lindon, Brett Molik,Thomas Raimondo, Jonathan Randell Silver*, and Timothy C. Roselle*.

Directed by Joe Pikowski, Set Design by Tim McMath, Lighting Design by Daisy Long, Costume Design by Annie Watkins, Properties by Ansley Fones , Fight Choreography by Dan Renkin, Assistant Direction by Paolo Solis and Stage Management by April Clark.
