The roster of NYC-based companies appearing on The Joyce stage this summer and spring is extraordinary. A season highlight will be the week-long appearance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in its final Joyce season before disbanding in December 2011 at the end of its two-year Legacy Tour. Two of these companies will celebrate anniversary seasons, and several will perform world premieres. The season will open with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, celebrating its 25th Anniversary with an engagement that features a world-premiere set to music by Stevie Wonder. Also celebrating an anniversary this year - its 30th - is Elisa Monte Dance, presenting a world premiere in a program that consists of company works from each of its three decades. Returning in June will be RIOULT, featuring a world premiere set to music by Pulitzer prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis. Buglisi Dance Theatre will perform a program that includes a world premiere, as well as Requiem, set to Fauré's soaring Mass. Armitage Gone! Dance, will present a program that includes a collaboration between the company and featured artists from the Dance Theatre of Harlem ensemble. Highlighting KEIGWIN + COMPANY will be a world premiere of an evening-length work that features music by electro-acoustic composer and cellist Chris Lancaster and pianist Jerome Begin. Underland, an evening-length work inspired by the bittersweet songs of Australian balladeer Nick Cave, will be on tap for this year's engagement of the Stephen Petronio Company. Doug Varone & Dancers will return with the New York premiere of its acclaimed work Chapters from a Broken Novel, with live accompaniment. And international superstar of tap, Savion Glover, will make fireworks on The Joyce stage during a three-week engagement that includes the 4th of July. Following the success of last summer's presentation of four female choreographers, the newly-minted Gotham Dance Festival will feature the return of the choreographers Kate Weare and Monica Bill Barnes, along with Patrick Corbin and Brian Brooks. The Festival will also present six emerging artists in Summer Sampler Matinees

"One of the few contemporary dance makers who have created an instantly recognizable style... fresh and unpredictable, jarring and just right, "proclaims The New York Times about Stephen Petronio. His Underland is a vividly surging work, inspired by the dark, bittersweet songs of Australian balladeer Nick Cave. Dancers hurl through space with razor sharp precision, fiercely energized one moment, sensually lyrical the next. Underland unravels in a series of solos, duets, and ensemble passages that build a powerfully fractured, enigmatic world filled with hope and despair. Completing the vision is a triptych of projected imagery by
Ken Tabachnick and
Mike Daly, with costumes by Tara Subkoff/Imitation of Christ.

All this translates into a compelling canon that, through both intelligent humor and melancholy, continually draws audiences to it. The company's special 40th anniversary season features three extraordinary programs that look back in delight-with works like Untitled, a 1975 winner, and Duet, a passionate piece from 1992-and, at the same time, celebrate the amazing range of more recent endeavors that include startling multimedia initiatives and collaborations with artists representing genres far beyond the realm of dance. The season premieres highlight this amazing diversity-a mind-boggling solo featuring flying robots from MIT's Distributed Robotics Laboratory Flight Team; a rhythmically-propelled work created in collaboration with OK Go, the hot rock n' roll band; and a full-company piece created with Takuya Muramastu, the principal choreographer from Dairakudakan, one of Japan's most intriguing butoh companies.

ABOUT The Joyce Theater
The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, has proudly served the dance community and its audiences since 1982. The founders, Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, acquired and renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea, which opened as The Joyce Theater in 1982. The Joyce is named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther's clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to establish the theater. One of the only theaters built by dancers for dance, The Joyce Theater has provided an intimate and elegant New York home for more than 300 domestic and international companies. The Joyce has also commissioned more than 130 new dances since 1992. In 1996, The Joyce created Joyce SoHo, a dance center providing highly subsidized rehearsal and performance space to hundreds of dance artists. New York City public school students and teachers annually benefit from The Joyce's Dance Education Program, and adult audiences get closer to dance through pre-engagement Dance Talks and post-performance "Dance Chat" discussions. The Joyce Theater now features an annual season of approximately 48 weeks with over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 135,000. Additionally, for six years The Joyce has co-produced Evening Stars as part of the River To River Festival in Lower Manhattan.
