Joyce SoHo Announces Their Spring/Summer Season

Joyce SoHo is set to present its Spring/Summer '12 season featuring a riveting line-up of the dance world's most innovative choreographers and companies. Among the highlights of the season, Joyce SoHo is presenting the world premiere of a full-length work by David Gordon that will run for the entire month of June in celebration of Gordon's impressive 50-year career as a dance maker. From April 4 -22, three companies will perform in rep including Alexandra Beller/Dances, skybetter and associates, and Decadancetheatre. Chunky Move is returning to Joyce SoHo with the New York premiere of a moving solo created and performed by Gideon Obarzanek. Additional highlights include two New York premieres from Helen Simoneau, winner of The A.W.A.R.D Show! 2010: New York City, and the New Dance Alliance 26th Annual Performance Mix Festival, a six day event that will feature twenty eclectic and experimental dance and performance artists showcasing a first time look at new work.

Most of these companies will be premiering new works, and several of this season's artists will host post-performance discussions in addition to the regularly scheduled performances. Below is a detailed roster of companies that will appear at Joyce SoHo from February 17, 2012 through July 29, 2012. Tickets may be purchased online at joyce.org or via JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800. San Francisco-basEd Levydance returns to Joyce SoHo with the New York premiere of ROMP, an immersive experience in which audience and performers inhabit the stage together while constructing a welcoming environment that is charged with possibility. Seating dancers and audience members together at banquet tables, ROMP provides a familiar setting for everyday interactions to transform and create an increasingly surreal and hyper-expressive world. For the past two years, the New York City-based duo Satoshi Haga and Rie Fukuzawa have been creating unique duet work. This season, the choreographers present an evening of mysterious labyrinths and curious Yin/Yang relationships in the premiere of The Same, Only Different; a re-visioning of Two in a Wild Fancy (2006); and their signature work Thread (2010), a second place winner at The A.W.A.R.D. Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup (NYC) returns to Joyce SoHo with the New York premiere of Prolegomena II, co-produced by Triskelion Arts. This dynamic and provocative work, created in collaboration with visual artist Karolien Soete and composer Alexander Berne, is the result of a year long exploration of literal and metaphoric darkness, characterized by movement that isolates and elevates. When we are confronted, particularly within an intimate relationship, with a story that diverges from ours, how do we deal with that friction against our reality? To celebrate the 150th birthday of modern-dance pioneer Loïe Fuller (1862-1928), Time Lapse Dance presents a season honoring her legacy. In tribute to Fuller, choreographer Jody Sperling, considered the foremost interpreter of Fuller's art, offers an evening of dances that vary from reverential to experimental. Inspired by the films City Lights and An American in Paris, NYC's Drama Desk-nominated Parallel Exit presents the premiere of an evening-length comic ballet, I Y BOB: The Amazing Adventures of an Ordinary Guy, a work that follows the story of two desperately lonely characters attempting to connect amid the speed and chaos of 21st century New York. Joyce SoHo's onsite box office is only open one half-hour prior to performance time to sell tickets exclusively for that performance. On days when there are performances, The Joyce Theater's box office is open through curtain time. Advance sales stop one hour prior to curtain times. For matinee curtains, advance sales begin one-half hour following that curtain time. The Joyce Theater's box office is closed on major holidays.
