Argentina's LA NACION newspaper is reporting that young actress Josefina Scaglione will portray Maria in the 2009 revival of West Side Story. The 21 year old Scaglione is a trained opera singer and has been in a production of Hairspray. She was set to portray Christine in a production of The Phantom of the Opera in Argentina but had to give that lead up for the coveted casting in the upcoming West Side Story, it is reported that she was told of winning the role of Maria by Arthur Laurents himself. A spokesman for the show had no comment at this time on the reported casting.
The revival of West Side Story will begin previews on February 23, 2009 with an official opening slated for March 19, 2009.

Arthur Laurents, who was recently nominated for a 2008 Tony Award for his direction of GYPSY, also one of his librettos.
This production, with an onstage cast of 37 and 30 musicians in the orchestra pit, will introduce the unprecedented element of selectively weaving Spanish throughout both the book and songs.
