Jonathan Larson's work continues to live on, this time in concert. Page Six writes that the RENT creator's "lost and unheard" songs will debut in a new show, produced by 'UNTOLD STORIES' author Jennifer Ashley Tepper next summer at Feinstein's/54 Below.
"Lost & Unheard Jonathan Larson Works" (Working Title) will feature tunes cut from RENT and TICK, TICK... BOOM!, as well as material from Larson's unproduced musicals, as well as his show SUPERBIA.
Tepper is knee-deep at the Library of Congress, delving through the scripts and scores of all of Larson's unseen works and melodies "to determine what the best possible representation of these gems will be in concert form," she told Page Six.
Whether any of the original stars of RENT, such as Broadway powerhouses Idina Menzel or Anthony Rapp, will take part in the program is up in the air. Tepper told Page Six she hopes the concert lineup will also feature other artists who worked with Larson and some fresh faces.
Jonathan Larson's RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters-love.
The show received its world premiere off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on February 13, 1996 to ecstatic reviews and transferred to Broadway on April 29, 1996. RENT won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show is currently on a 20th Anniversary Tour across the U.S.
