Broadway and Hollywood star Jonathan Groff opens up about the importance of coming out in his own life as part of a gay pride parade appearance last weekend where he served as co-grand marshal of the event.

Sharing his appreciation for the positive reaction to coming out by his parents when he did, Groff amusingly recalls, "When I came out to my parents I said, 'I'm gay, but I'm never going to be marching in a parade!'"

Groff continues, "From my own experience, I didn't realize how much better my life was going to get until I came out."

Additionally, Groff says of his coming out experience, "Once you come out and stop living that sort of compartmentalized existence, for me, I lived a much happier, fuller life. It changed my life when I came out of the closet."

THE NORMAL HEART aired May 25 on HBO.

LOOKING is set to return with an expanded second season later this year according to recent reports.
