New York Philharmonic President and Executive Director Zarin Mehta has appointed John Mangum as Artistic Administrator of the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Mangum assumes his position on September 2, 2009, two weeks prior to the start of the Orchestra's 2009-10 season under the baton of its new Music Director, Alan Gilbert.
Mr. Mangum has been the vice president for artistic planning of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) since August 2007, working with the SPCO's Artistic Partners and Artistic Vision Committee to create and implement artistic initiatives, including recruitment of artistic partners, guest artist engagements, season programming, touring, festivals, and media projects. He also has been involved in the planning and implementation of the orchestra's 50th anniversary season, including its International Chamber Orchestra Festival, and the return to Carnegie Hall in May 2008 following a 10-year absence.
"I am delighted that John will be joining the Philharmonic as this exciting time in our history," said Mr. Mehta. "The start of our 168th season in September coincides with the launch of a new era under the musical leadership of Alan Gilbert, and John's wide-ranging experience will be an enormous asset to us. We all look forward to working with him."
"I am greatly looking forward to collaborating with John as I begin my tenure as Music Director; I know that he and I will have a strong artistic partnership during this period of evolution at the Philharmonic," said Alan Gilbert. "With his deep knowledge and experience, the possibilities are thrilling."
Prior to The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, John Mangum worked in various positions with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association (August 2005-July 2007), most recently as artistic administrator, where he was responsible for all aspects of the orchestra's programming at the Hollywood Bowl and was involved with the programming of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, including chamber music series, festivals, and Green Umbrella new music series. He also has served as program designer/annotator, and has written program notes and articles for the Salzburg Festival, Harmonia Mundi, Hong Kong Arts Festival, and Los Angeles Opera, among others. He holds a Ph.D. in history in the field of musicology, in addition to master's and bachelor's degrees in history, all from the University of California, Los Angeles.
John Mangum replaces Matías Tarnopolsky, who has been named director of U.C. Berkeley's Cal Performances.
