Classic Stage Company just posted an Equity audition notice hunting for "actor/singer/musicians" to star in ALLEGRO, directed by John Doyle with musical direction by Mary Mitchell Campbell. The production is slated to begin rehearsals in September for a first preview on November 1, 2014.
The listing reads: "Seeking a versatile company of 12 strong actor/singer/musicians to play 39 roles. Specifically interested in actors who play the following instruments: Violin, Fiddle, Guitar, Banjo, Cello, Double Bass, Mandolin, Accordion, Flute, Piano and Clarinet."
ALLEGRO, with music by Richard Rodgers and book & lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, made its Broadway debut in 1947, directed and choreographed by Agnes de Mille and starring John Battles.
The story centers on the life of Joseph Taylor, Jr., a man who pursues a career as a doctor and soon becomes entranced by fortune and fame. New York City Center Encores! presented ALLEGRO in 1994 starring Stephen Bogardus with Christopher Reeve as the narrator. A revised version of the show by Joe DiPietro took the Signature Theatre stage in Washington, D.C. in 2004.
Doyle has directed Broadway's Sweeney Todd, for which he won a 2006 Tony Award, Company and A Catered Affair, as well as off-Broadway's Road Show, Wings, Passion and Romeo and Juliet.
