Matt Alber

Monday, June 6 at 7:30 PM; $15

"Everyone says the best songs are born out of tragedy. But for me they come from that last sliver of hope that things just might turn around."

Seattle-based singer/songwriter Matt Alber has been writing about that same sliver of hope since he quit his day job and started making records at home. Alber's first full-length album, Hide Nothing, does just that. He sings openly about a boyhood crush on a Field-trip Buddy. In Beotia, he sings both parts of a duet (one in coloratura soprano) between male lovers in an ancient army. He even plays a 1960s crooner in the music video for End of the World, finding love in a barbershop with a gentleman getting his shoes shined. Sonically he culls everything from chopped-up beats to children's choirs - and did I hear a real bassoon? But Alber's songs, while keeping the pronouns honest, seep deeply into the heart of any listener who's ever wondered if things were going to work out.

Followers of Iron & Wine, Imogen Heap and Eva Cassidy will rest easy at Alber's shows. A quick glance around the room will reveal numerous couples holding hands, gay hipsters galore and probably somebody's parents. At a recent show in New York, a starry-eyed couple drove in from Connecticut (in the snow on a Monday) to catch Alber's set with a string quartet at the elegant Rockwood Music Hall. Gushed the girl: "My boyfriend came home and said, 'Lisa, grab your purse. We're driving to the city to make out to Matt Alber.'" www.mattalber.com

CAROLYN WONDERLAND

"Stated plainly, Wonderland has one of the most impressively powerful voices recently heard anywhere, regardless of sex. Able to boon, cajole, promise growl, and wheedle with equal power, she plays guitar with much the same forcefulness." - Matt Weitz, Dallas Observer

Paul Sanchez

Tuesday, June 7 at 9:30 PM; $17

Paul Sanchez is a troubadour from New Orleans. He is a storyteller, his own as well as ours. He is a student and a teacher. A traveler that finds home in different faces every night. He writes songs the way your grandmother might have crafted quilts, painstakingly sewing the pieces together to form a blanket that will keep you warm when it's time to rest your head.

Paul entertains and provokes. He holds your hand and he slaps your wrist. He's lived a thousand lives, but he wakes up every day with the wide eyes of a new born babe. He has a skewed vision of the world that comes only with an existence based in New Orleans, a city rampant with celebration and despair. It's beyond colloquialisms and language. It's more of a slant and feel. It's in the words he loves, and the friends he writes. It's in the pain of having known a welfare Christmas, the joy of having known a welfare Christmas, and the joy of having toasted fine wine from a grand European chateau. Cut him, it's in his blood

New Orleans Songwriter of the Year, Best Song of the Year for Hey God and Best Folk/Rock Album for Stew Called New Orleans

He appears in season one of the new HBO series, "Treme," in episode 4 which is titled, At The Foot Of Canal Street", after a song he wrote with long time collaborator, John Boutte'. John and Paul appear in the episode singing the song, Foot Of Canal Street. Boutte' and Sanchez also appear on the Grammy Nominated compilation album from the Treme series Treme: Music From The HBO Original Series, Season 1: Various Artists: MP3 Downloads.

Boutte' and Sanchez were in episode one of season two of

"Treme,", again singing the title song for the episode, Accentuate The Positive, as well as their own tune Sisters.

Sanchez along with writing partner Colman deKay, just released musical adaptation of Dan Baum's New York Times bestselling book, Nine Lives which features the talents of over one hundred New Orleans musicians and singers. As well as Michael Cerveris, Wendell Pierce, Harry Shearer and Allen Toussaint. http://www.paulsanchez.com/

John Grant w/ special guests HEIDI SPENCER & ALESSI'S ARK

Wednesday & Thursday, June 8 & 9 at 9:30 PM; $20
with special guests Heidi Spencer on June 8 & Alessi's Ark on June 9

Everyone has a favorite band or singer they reckon is subject to criminal neglect. That John Grant's effortlessly rich, expansive baritone, couched in typically heartbreaking, lush melody, hasn't found a wider audience indeed drives his fans to consider a crime. But no longer. Because Grant's first solo album, Queen of Denmark, following three undervalued studio albums (and one similar covers compilation) fronting The Czars, is so undeniably great that the world will surely listen.
