WASHINGTON

Monday, March 22 at 11:30 PM

21 year-old Brisbane singer/songwriter Megan Washington is a something of a rarity - a trained and talented musician inclined toward exploring something deeper.

Appearing on stage with a large number of very different artists, like the Bamboos, Ben Lee, Camille, Tim Finn, and Old Man River and a series of random collaborations with the likes of Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band, Washington began to determine the path of her own career as a songwriter. She's not interested in being pigeonholed in one genre, and her work crosses a number of styles, from country and folk to more complex song structures reminiscent of Kate Bush. Her influences range from Paul Simon to Billie Holiday; Leonard Cohen to Radiohead.

Even as she readies her first full-length album for a 2010 launch, Washington has just readied her second EP How To Tame Lions which is to be released in September. The EP is a stand-alone work of 5 tracks, each of equal merit. So much so that it features two A-side singles, ‘Cement' and the lovely ‘How To Tame Lions'. The former is already clocking up airtime with Triple J.

Megan draws inspiration from many sources, and likewise many are inspired by her. A true artiste with global potential. How To Tame Lions is the start of something very special. $10

DAVELL CRAWFORD: HOSTED BY Roberta Flack

Saturday, March 26 at 9:30 PM

Davell Crawford, an all-around musical sensation, is one of the true wonders of the contemporary Crescent City music scene. Bill Taylor from Blues Access proclaims, "Plain and simple, Davell Crawford is one of the most talented musicians alive!".

Also known as the "Prince of New Orleans," Davell is one of the city's most exiting live performers. Cited as one of the few musicians committed to keeping the piano sounds of New Orleans alive, he stands as the only and most documented young piano player that has kept the music true while adding a little freshness and vitality.

Performing since the age of seven, Davell has already enjoyed a widely acclaimed career as an entertainer. He emerged as a teenage piano terror and began to unfold his incredible talent before the world. He has toured many countries including Spain, Italy, France, Russia, Finland, Dominica, Brazil, Morocco, and Portugal among others. He has played extensively thorough out the states as well.

As a true roots musician, he shoots out from his deep gospel roots to incorporate the entire piano tradition from R & B to Blues, Soul and Funk. "Davell is the embodiment of every New Orleans music legend that has ever lived, from Jelly Roll Morton to Dr. John, from Mahalia and Satchmo, to James Booker and Professor Longhair, all rolled up into one musical ball of fire." $20 / $15 Students (w/ ID)

CHRIS KNIGHT

Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 PM

Ten years and five acclaimed albums into one of the most uncompromising careers in American music, the singer/songwriter whose work has been compared to Prine, Cash and Nebraska-era Springsteen by some the toughest music writers in America may have finally conquered his most demanding critic of all: himself. Chris Knight has always been an artist of fierce instinct and uncommon paradox. A former strip-mine reclamation inspector, Knight still lives in the rural coal town of Slaughters, Kentucky (population 200) where he was born and raised. But it's been on record - as well as everywhere from rowdy Texas roadhouses to hushed New York City theaters - where Chris has forged the reputation for a stark and often-ferocious honesty that led one writer to call his music "where Cormac McCarthy meets Copperhead Road." $20

DENDÊ AND HÃHÃHÃES: BAHIA DE TODOS OS SANTOS CD RELEASE

Friday, March 27 at 9:30 PM

"...the band grounds lighthearted melodies and reflective vocals in an expert amalgamation of Afro-Brazilian and Cuban rhythms." -Flavorpill

"...Dende, from Brazil, merged a strutting beat and annunciatory salvos on a single drum..." - NY Times

"The sinuous jams of Dende & Hahahaes ought to delight fans of Afrobeat and psych-tinged funk." - Time Out New York

Dendê's Debut Album Melds Traditional Afro-Brazilian Rhythms with the Global Pulse of Jazz, Reggae, Funk, Rumba and Afrobeat

Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He's been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown's superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he's been splitting his time between New York and Bahia. His own bands include the folkloric music and dance troupe Ologundê, the acoustic Samba de Três, and Arrastão do Dendê, a traditional Afro bloco (samba party band), but it's as leader and principal songwriter of Hãhãhães that Dendê has made his greatest impact. Bahia de Todos os Santos, their debut album, showcases the band's sizzling showmanship and versatility.

Dendê and Hãhãhães will soon be taking their music to the people with an energetic show that combines a relentless groove, first class musicianship, and socially conscious lyrics that will move your spirit as well as your body. $12

CARRIE NEWCOMER: CD RELEASE

Sunday, March 28 at 7:00 PM

"Carrie is a touchstone of authenticity in an image-driven, media-defined musical world. She is a beautiful singer and songwriter, and deeply refreshing." - Rosanne Cash

Newcomer's new Rounder release, The Geography of Light, is about navigating and exploring the appearance of light and shadow in our lives. It is a layered work. On one level, the listener experiences these types of connections through Newcomer's lyrics, which explore life with a progressive spiritual sensibility. In a world that encourages us to move faster and think bigger, Newcomer invites the listener to slow down and reflect on the small things that make life worthwhile. As Rolling Stone wrote, "Newcomer asks all the right questions and refuses to settle for easy answers." On another level, the listener hears a skillfully arranged and performed collection of folk roots tracks, with Appalachian and classical influences. Newcomer's style is straightforward and accessible. Overall, she is not afraid to take on serious subjects, and does so with a healthy measure of good humor and self-awareness. For her, "songwriting is not about being clever, flashy or fancy-it is about telling a compelling story in language and music with elegance and clarity." The result is a resonant soundtrack for a world that is both sacred and ordinary.

$15 in advance / $18 at the door
