JANELLE MONÁE

Friday & Saturday, April 9 & 10 at 7:00 PM

A ground-breaking, genre-blurring singer, songwriter, producer, and performer, Janelle Monáe's inventive style melds a refined pop sensibility with an extraordinary postmodern mash-up of soul, funk, and rock ‘n' roll. The Grammy nominated singer will be releasing her widely anticipated full length debut album "The ArchAndroid" on May 18th. "The ArchAndroid" follows Monáe's two acclaimed EPs, 2008's "Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition)" and "Metropolis: Suite I OF IV," both of which received extensive critical praise upon their initial releases. Two songs from the upcoming album entitled "Tightrope" (featuring Big Boi) and "Cold War" are now available for purchase exclusively via www.janellemonae.com. In support of the upcoming release Monáe, who has developed a reputation for her incredibly dynamic live shows, will be doing a series of exclusive residencies in a number of cities across North America and join this summer's much anticipated 2010 Lilith Tour for select dates. For full details and the latest news visit www.janellemonae.com. $15

ETHAN LIPTON & HIS ORCHESTRA: HONKER CD RELEASE

Saturday, April 10 at 9:00 PM

"Hilarious, twisted, sophisticated, schleppy and sad all at once." - NPR's Weekend Edition

"It's always enjoyable when a singer-songwriter throws some humor into his misery." - Time Out NY

"Ethan Lipton & his Orchestra are not your average band. They're not even your non-average band. They are out there. I'm talking past Pluto the non-planet out there. And that's a good thing." - Mainstream Isn't So Bad

Dubbed ‘Best Lounge Act of 2009' by New York Magazine, Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra play a brand of uncategorizable folk/jazz/country/lounge- lizardry that's drawn comparisons to the music of Leon Redbone, They Might Be Giants, Randy Newman and Tom Waits. With melancholy wit and a hilariously cockeyed worldview, sepia-toned singer-songwriter Lipton and band mates Eben Levy (guitar), Ian Riggs (bass) and Vito Dieterle

(sax) deliver songs steeped in sincerity and soul. The band has appeared at Celebrate Brooklyn, MASS MOCA, Bryant Park, the Camden Opera House, Tangier (LA), Vermont Arts Exchange, and has been featured on NPR and radio stations around the country.

This show celebrates the release of HONKER, the band's fourth album, which was financed entirely by its fans through the fundraising website Kickstarter. Special guests include The National's Matt Berninger and Gloria Deluxe's Cynthia Hopkins. $15

MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO

Thursday, April 8 - Saturday, April 10 at Midnight
"In the search for love, truth and justice a good vamp never hurts. That's the modus operandi of Meshell Ndegeocello." - Jon Pareles, The New York Times

The Best of Bitter & More (4/8 & 4/9) & a Night of Gil Scott-Heron covers (4/10)

Canonized, marginalized or just scrutinized, Meshell Ndegeocello has given up with the politics of explaining herself. After 20 years in an industry that has called her everything from avant garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is the fearsome bassist, prolific songwriter and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. With that, she has earned critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters and composers, and the dedication of her diverse, unclassifiable fans. For the sake of setting the record straight, a few brass tacks remain: Meshell was born in Germany, raised in DC, signed at 23, and has been nominated for 10 Grammy awards.

Meshell returns to Joe's for what promises to be 3 unforgettable nights of music with The Best of Bitter & More on April 8th & 9th, and a night of Gil Scott-Heron covers on April 10th, 2010. $25

GAMELAN DHARMA SWARA

Sunday, April 11 at 7:00 PM

An ensemble of the nonprofit organization Arts Indonesia, Gamelan Dharma Swara is dedicated to the study, performance and creation of traditional and new works for Balinese Gamelan. Through performance and education, we bring Balinese gamelan to the widest audience and participant base possible, and we endeavor to perform with spirit, dedication and gratitude. We are a coalition of master Balinese artists and leading American composers, musicians and dancers. In residence at the Indonesian Consulate in New York, Dharma Swara regularly performs for a wide and multicultural audience in the greater New York City Area.

We have been invited by the Governor of Bali (Madé Mangku Pastika) to perform at the 2010 Bali Arts Festival head to head with other Balinese groups on the immense Arda Chandra stage. This is the first time a non-Balinese group has been asked to perform in this format. Leading up to our performance at the Bali Arts Festival we will conduct a "mini-tour" of the island, performing in the traditional meeting houses (banjar) of several villages including: Ubud, Jagaraga, Tenganan, Kerambitan and Mengwitani. $12

SCREAM ALONG WITH BILLY: THE MANHATTAN PROJECT

Sunday, April 11 at 9:30 PM

" Gay street-hustler-once-removed rough-rides the rock canon and tells drug stories that'll make you chortle as your hair stands on end." Robert Christgau, MSN.com

"Kept the audience mesmerized. Absurdist theater can happen anywhere, especially if it's kept alive by an artist like Hough..." Hilton Als, The New Yorker

"A cross between Justin Bond and Patti Smith." Adam Baran, Buttmagazine.com

"Billy Hough is touched by genius, a word I don't use often or lightly." Michael Cunningham

"Anything can happen. And does." Ann Wood, Provincetown Magazine

Provincetown's dangerous cult cabaret act, Scream Along With Billy, pulls into Joe's Pub for their New York City debut. Billy Hough, from the legendary punk band garageDogs, sings, screams, rants, and fights his way through the history of rock-n-roll. Accompanied by the historically accurate Sue Goldberg (Space Pussy) on bass and eye-rolls, the duo have earned a provocative reputation for themselves by finding the midpoint between piano bar and horror movie.

Their first album, Scream Along With Billy: The Album was released last fall to universal acclaim. It was given an honorable mention for 2009 by esteemed rock critic, Robert Christgau, and was picked up by Marc Jacobs for distribution in his stores worldwide.

They will be joined at Joe's Pub by Billy's brother Paul Hough (also of the garageDogs) on drums.

This show is not for children. $15 in advance, $20 at the door

NORA YORK

Monday, April 12 at 7:00 PM

"This daring vocalist and conceptualist is able to turn her ruminations into fascinating musical explorations. York is sure to take us to parts un-dreamed of. "-- The New Yorker

"The philosopher diva... part passionate performance art, part classy jazz chanteuse styling, all imaginative originality... A post modern jazz diva." -- Austin American Statesman

Singer Nora York, a Pub favorite, returns with her song cycle EXTREME: LOVE and HATE... JOY and SORROW... WAR and PEACE... RICH and POOR.

After petitioning her fan base for song requests, the responses was so varied that York decided to sing the EXTREME, songs from Stadium bands, country western favorites, Broadway hits and her own iconic original tunes.

She is joined by the Amazing Band ( Jamie Lawrence on piano, Steve Tarshis on guitar, Dave Hofstra on bass and Peter Grant on drums). $20
