MAY 15 - MAY 17

DOUG WAMBLE

Saturday, May 15 at 7:00 PM

"...this guitarist, singer, and composer is a one-man compendium of avant-Americana." - New Yorker
"...[Wamble's music] is as fascinating as it is idiosyncratic...a guitarist-singer-composer with a bright future." - Los Angeles Times

Listening to the third solo release from guitarist, singer, and songwriter Doug Wamble, it is hard to believe that the Tennessee-bred musician was ever a jazz purist. The ten original songs on Doug Wamble, plus a closing cover version of Fiona Apple's "I Know," blend a bounty of soul, gospel, blues, R&B, country, pop, and folk inspirations into a deeply personal and original sound. $15

GARY LUCAS: SOLO ACOUSTIC

Saturday, May 15 at 9:30 PM

Gary Lucas has been called "The Thinking Man's Guitar Hero" (The New Yorker), "A modern guitar miracle" (Rolling Stone) and "One of the 100 greatest living guitarists" (Classic Rock).

One area of guitar-playing he particularly excels at is performing solo acoustic. As Gary has said before, this is his favorite arena to work in: "Any electric guitarist can sound totally awesome cranked up to 11 in front of a wall of Marshalls, without necessarily possessing any real skills as a player. But in the solo acoustic mode, there's no place to hide. You're either going to be able to pull it off in front of an audience or you're not. It's my favorite mode of expression on guitar, it's like a little symphony orchestra, a total universe of sound at your fingertips. If I had to choose which guitar to take with me to a desert island, it would have to be my acoustic 1946 Gibson J-45-without a doubt."

A Gary Lucas solo acoustic concert is a tour de force, covering the length and breadth of Gary's Grammy-nominated songwriting, his arrangements of classical music, country blues, George Gershwin, 30's Chinese pop, music from Jacques Tati films, covers of Captain Beefheart and Jeff Buckley, Jewish children's music, and much much more. $17

Time Out has called him "one of Britain's greatest songwriters" and NME 'Britains best keep secret" "Oh Mighty Engine is an understated gem of eccentric Englishness: like Syd Barrett if he'd ever set foot on a surf board- The man is a Legend" NME $20

CAROLYN WONDERLAND
Sunday, May 16 at 7:00 PM
"A dollop of Janis Joplin, a slice of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and a big load of soulful individuality. That's Wonderland, a seething-hot Texas singer-guitarist. And she can write, too." - Boston Herald

"Throaty Texan Carolyn Wodnerland knows her way around six strings, but it's her soulful, near-contralto boicee that clinches the deal. Wonderland's a dynamic performer with a social conscience and her new record, Miss Understood, is a solid example of down-ome soul played by a woman who's got it in spades." - Eugene Weekly

A triple threat with her diverse songwriting, soulful vocals, and guitar goddess status - all featured on over twenty CDs, six of which are her releases - Caroyln Wonderland has a pedigree in this business that's hard to match. A bit of a renegade, she likes to incorporate elements of blues, country, swing, zydeco, surf, gospel, soul, and some nights, maybe even a cumbia into the musical mix.

Recent years have seen Wonderland stretching out musically, working some expert whistling and scat singing into her shows. In addition to her trusty guitar, "Patty," Carolyn has been regularly playing her trumpet, and even occasionally the accordion, mandolin, or keys...she is threatening to take up nose flute if someone doesn't stop her...

Wonderland's songs have been featured on NBC's Homicide, Fox's Time of Your Life, & Houston NORML even made a video PSA set to Carolyn's Annie's Scarlet Letter. She has toured with acts like Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter, sat-in with String Cheese Incident, Robert Earl Keen, and Los Lobos, and even sang the "National Anthem" at Sturgis Bike Week 2003 - her 10th anniversary playing Sturgis - before Robbie Kneivel's record-breaking jump over one hundred Harleys. Recently, she was a panelist at the University of Texas LBJ Library's "Instruments of Freedom" Forum with Kinky Friedman, Marcia Ball, Jerry Jeff Walker and others. She's been lucky enough to jam with mentors and friends like Bob Dylan, Eddy Shaver and Ray Benson. $15

MARIA RADUCANU

Sunday, May 16 at 9:30 PM

The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York presents the U.S. debut of Maria Raducanu, one of the most original singers in contemporary Romanian jazz, together with two international outstanding musicians: Krister Jonsson (guitar) and Chris Dahlgren (bass). This concert follows their brief performance during Symphony Space's "Wall to Wall behind the Wall" festival on May 15, 2010, and features jazz translations of Romanian folk music, as well as romances from last century's Bucharest. Maria Raducanu erupted on the Romanian jazz scene with a very personal translation of traditional Romanian music, which she renders in all its simplicity. Her incantations touch the listener with their spare and somber sonority. Fado and Balkan folklore, cradle songs and Russian romances, jazz standards and Sephardic songs, tangos and bossa nova, all these different strains flow into each other, blending into an all-encompassing sound vortex. She has toured widely across Europe with both Romanian and international musicians. $15

Declan Bennett - RECORD: BREAK UP
Monday, May 17 at 7:00 PM
"Declan is the real thing. He sings from the heart, and I defy anyone not to be touched by his songs" - Award-winning songwriter Linda Thompson

Declan Bennett is a hard-hitting, dynamic singer-songwriter from England whose unashamed and honest tales of life, love and sexuality have won him a diverse and devoted fan base around the UK, across the US and beyond. He returns to Joes Pub to present a brand new collection of songs slated to appear on his 3rd album due for release later this year. It's been 2 years since he released his sophomore effort ‘An Innocent Evening of Drinking' which garnered critical praise from both press and fellow artists, most notably Boy George, who invited him to open for him on his last UK tour. A departure from his more familiar solo acoustic style, this new material sees him armed with an electric guitar, some informal distortion and a brand new full band. Declan is also in the original cast of Green Days ‘American Idiot', now premiering on Broadway. $15
