On Saturday October 11th, 2008 Broadway legends and friends Marvin Hamlisch and Joel Grey teamed up and performed at the Zoellner Arts Center's 2008 Gala at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, NY.
The Gala was a benefit for Zoellner Arts Center, which during the past decade, has become the premier center for the arts in the Lehigh Valley. Each year, the center presents more than 100 gallery exhibits and performances by guest artists and students from Lehigh's Music and Theatre Departments. The generosity of alumni and friends provides half of the center's annual budget.
Marvin Hamlisch is the composer behind the hit musicals The Way We Were, A Chorus Line, and Sophie's Choice. Hamlisch has won virtually every major award to be had: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globes, as well as the Pulitzer Prize. In addition to his own credits, Mr. Hamlisch was also the rehearsal pianst for Funny Girl.
Joel Grey originated the role of the Emcee in the Broadway musical Cabaret in 1966 for which he won the Tony Award. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1972 for his performance as the Master of Ceremonies in the movie version. He is one of only seven people who have won both a Tony Award and an Academy Award (Oscar) for the same role. He was also one of the first people to guest star on The Muppet Show in its first season, singing Razzle Dazzle and Cabaret. In the 1996 Broadway revival of Chicago, Joel played Amos Hart. Recently,
Joel Grey was part of the original cast of the
Stephen Schwartz musical
Wicked as the Wizard himself, playing opposite
Idina Menzel and
Kristin Chenoweth.
