The artists present "Die Jahrhundertwende," a program featuring songs by two of the last great romantic Lieder composers (Wolf and Brahms) and two pioneers of modernity (Schoenberg and Berg). Along with two less famous but exceptionally interesting transitional figures (Zemlinsky and Pfitzner), the program explores the astonishing variety in German Song during this pivotal 15 years.

These songs set texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Hebbel, Alfred Momberg, Richard Dehmel, among others. The program also includes songs set to Paul Heyse's translations of anonymous Italian poems into German, as well as texts from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

The artists on the program include soprano Jo Ellen Miller, baritone John Maynard, and pianist Katie Reimer. Jo Ellen Miller was praised by the New York Times for her "lovely rounded tone," and has performed under conductors as James Levine, Pierre Boulez, and Keith Lockhart. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall (all three stages), Avery Fisher Hall, Symphony Space, and with such organizations as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Met Chamber Ensemble, and the Boston Pops.

Baritone John Maynard is quickly gaining recognition as an exciting talent, praised equally for his "abundance of lyricism" (Boston Globe) and his bold acting choices. He has been heard recently with San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, and Middlebury Opera, as well as with Teatro Grattacielo, Greenwich Choral Society, and Monmouth Civic Chorus. Pianist Katie Reimer was acclaimed by the New York Times for her "meditative" playing, and is currently the Pianist, Artistic and Executive Director of the Mimesis Ensemble, a New York City based group dedicated to music from the 20th and 21st centuries. She has performed extensively as a solo and chamber pianist, and was engaged by Bridge Records and Sono Luminus for commercial recordings.
