The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy will be exploring housing of this iconic immigrant neighborbood with its O! Multitudes! II. For the past century and a half, immigrants have crowded its streets and tenements, and established cultural, social and religious institutions.
On this tour, housing on the Lower East Side will continue to be explored. Also, learn how to distinguish a tenement from a row house and see examples of pre-law, old law and new law tenements. You will be surprised by the rear tenement double-deckers that remain from 1867 pre-law housing legislation. New architecture will be contrasted to sites visited.
This tour is a further exploration of the architecture of the Lower East Side in relation to the development of New York City's housing. The evolution of Lower East Side housing from the mid-nineteenth century to contemporary luxury housing will be discussed.
As you walk down iconic Lower East Side streets including Hester Street, Orchard Street, Grand Street, and Delancey Street, we'll discuss changes and contrasts in housing over the last century. The tour will begin with a pre-law tenement on Eldridge Street and conclude with BLUE, a recently constructed condominium on Delancey Street.

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating the Jewish heritage of the Lower East Side. Private customized tours available by appointment.
The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to the historic preservation of the Lower East Side's sacred sites. The Conservancy has formed relationships with the leaders of all of these sacred sites. It is these professional relationships that open doors for our visitors. They can experience the spectacular sacred sites of the Lower East Side from the inside out! A portion of the proceeds of each tour is returned to the sacred sites visited on that tour, contributing to their restoration and conservation.
The Conservancy takes great pride in being a full service organization. What that means for our visitors is that we take the time on the phone before a tour is booked to make your experience on the Lower East Side as enjoyable and memorable as possible.
