"In
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser in this funny, tender and sardonic musical," as the show is described in press notes.
While
Spelling Bee continues its Broadway run at the Circle in the Square Theatre, productions are also playing in
Chicago at the Drury Lane Theatre/Water Tower Place and in San Francisco at the Post Street Theatre. The San Francisco production finishes its run on September 3 and then moves, with most of its original cast, to Boston's Wilbur Theatre, where performances begin September 26. Additionally, a national touring production kicks off at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center beginning September 19.
The show was conceived by
Rebecca Feldman, features music and lyrics by Tony Award-winner
William Finn (
Falsettos, Elegies) and a Tony Award-winning book by
Rachel Sheinkin, with additional material by
Jay Reiss.
