Jeffrey Seller Directs Dallas Theater Center's FLY World Premiere, Beg. Tonight

Dallas Theater Center presents the world premiere of Fly, a new musical based on J.M. Barrie's novel, Peter Pan. Three-time Tony Award-winning producer Jeffrey Seller (Rent, Avenue Q, In the Heights) makes his directorial debut with this production.

Fly opens with previews tonight, July 2 and runs through Sunday, August 18 at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in the AT&T Performing Arts Center. Tickets to Fly are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.DallasTheaterCenter.org or by phone at (214) 880-0202.

In Fly, Wendy and John take off to Neverland with Peter to find their brother Michael. The trio gets separated before their arrival and their exciting and danger-filled adventures lead to the unexpected. Packed with soaring flying expeditions, sword fights with pirates, stunning choreography and spectacular drum beats, Fly is a thrilling theatrical journey meant for adults and kids. Hidden in the excitement are questions about what it means to grow up and the beauty of embracing the natural course of life. To tell the story, Seller cast children to portray Peter, Wendy, John and the Lost Boys.

Seller first came up with the notion of a new Peter Pan after winning his third Tony Award for In the Heights. "After I won the Tony Award for producing In the Heights, I thought about what I wanted to do next," said Seller. "My mind always went back to my childhood and, ultimately, Peter Pan. This vision became so compelling to me that I soon realized I had my next musical. There's a version of Peter Pan that's in my head that sounds different, looks different, and feels different than any I've seen before."

Seller's vision will come to life on stage in Dallas with a 30-person company of children and adults. Broadway veteran Bradley Dean (Spamalot, Evita) makes his DTC debut as the infamous villain Captain Hook. Eleven-year-olds Isabela Moner and Grant Venable, also first-timers to DTC, star as Wendy and Peter Pan. Austin Karkowsky will appear as John and Morgan Weed as Tink. DTC Brierley Resident Acting Company members include Hassan El-Amin (The Odd Couple, King Lear) and Chamblee Ferguson (A Christmas Carol, The Odd Couple, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) as pirates. With a book by Rajiv Joseph, music by Bill Sherman and lyrics by Rajiv Joseph and Kirsten Childs, Fly employs a wholly new musical style. "The drum is the heartbeat of the island," said Seller. "The aural landscape is driven by rhythm and percussion. We try to use only instruments that could be handmade on an island - drums, strings and the like."

Tony Award-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler (In the Heights) and aerial designer Pichon Baldinu will move members of the cast across, and over, Anna Louizos' bamboo set. Additional members of the design team include Tony Award-winning music supervisor Alex Lacamoire, Tony Award-winning costume designer Marina Draghici, Tony Award-winning lighting designer Howell Binkley, sound designer Nevin Steinberg, fight director Ron Piretti and percussion supervisor Tim Keiper.

Barrie first wrote of Peter Pan in the 1902 adult novel The Little White Bird. In 1904 he wrote the stage play and then expanded Peter's story for a novel in 1911. The first authorized Broadway adaptation was staged in 1924. Leonard Bernstein's adaptation premiered on Broadway in 1950 starring Jean Arthur as Peter Pan and Boris Karloff as Captain Hook. Walt Disney's Peter Pan was released a few years later in 1953. Mary Martin took the stage as Peter in 1954. Since 1902, more than 50 novel, stage, film, radio and comic adaptations of Peter Pan have been created.

Fly opens with previews on Tuesday, July 2 at 7:30pm with a Pay-What-You-Can performance. Tickets to this performance will be available for purchase online at www.DallasTheaterCenter.org beginning Wednesday, June 26. Any unsold tickets to the PWYC performance will be available for purchase at the Wyly Theatre box office the night of the show beginning at 6:00pm. Kayah A. Franklin (Tree) A native of Sacramento, CA., Kayah received her B.F.A. in Dance Arts from Howard University under Dr. Sherrill Berryman-Johnson and Pat Thomas. Additional training includes studies at Maryland Youth Ballet, The Dance Institute of Washington, Earl Mosley's Institute of the Arts, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and KanKouran West African Dance Company. Pichon Baldinu (Flight Director) is a theatre director, flight designer and choreographer. In 1984 he founded "La Organizacion Negra" the first underground theatre company set in Buenos Aires. In 1993, he founded "De la Guarda" which gave birth to the show Villa Villa, a hit that ran for seven years Off-Broadway and toured all over the world until 2006. In 2005, he worked as Aerial Designer for the Disney Theatrical Broadway Musical Tarzan. In 2006 he co-founded the company "Ojala" and presented the show Hombre Vertiente in Zaragoza, Buenos Aires, Brazil, and Mexico.

Ron Piretti (Fight Director) is an actor and fight director. He has staged the fights for the Broadway productions of West Side Story, In the Heights, The Miracle Worker, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, and The Performers. Ron appeared as Officer Krupke in the Broadway production of West Side Story. He has taught acting and/or stage combat for The Actors Studio MFA Program at Pace University, Wagner College and Marymount Manhattan College. He attended Trinity University in San Antonio and received his MFA from the Goodman School of Drama.

Tim Keiper (Percussion Supervisor) Tim Keiper moved to New York City in 1999 and has since focused on touring, recording, and building musical instruments. He has worked with Cyro Baptista, John Zorn, Julie Taymor, Elliot Goldenthal, Jonas Mekas, Mike Stern, Professor Neon, and Dirty Projectors. Since 2007, he's worked extensively with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure, including performances at Festival in the Desert in Timbuktu and the opening concert for the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg. Recently, he had the honor to play on Ali Farka Toure's posthumous release with Toumani Diabate, Ali and Toumani.

Andy Señor Jr. (Assistant Director) made his professional debut in the Tony Award-winning musical Rent as Angel, playing the role on Broadway, in London, Asia, Los Angeles and US National Tours. He studied theatre at Florida International University and The Public Theater Shakespeare LAB where he appeared in All's Well That Ends Well. He was the Associate Director to Michael Greif on the RENT revival Off-Broadway and re-staged the production in Tokyo, Japan. ABOUT Dallas Theater Center: One of the leading regional theaters in the country, Dallas Theater Center (DTC) performs to an audience of more than 120,000 North Texas residents annually.
