Veteran vocalist Roberta Donnay and her Prohibition Mob Band, whose new album "My Heart Belongs to Satchmo-a collection of tunes from the Louis Armstrong songbook of the 1920's-is drawing rave reviews, will play New York's famed Birdland Jazz club (315 W. 44th St.) on Thursday, Jan. 10.
Donnay recently unveiled her version of the holiday standard, "Baby, It's Cold Outside," a tune she collaborated with the late, great Bob Dorough of Miles Davis fame and was only released last week for national radio air play. Dorough, who will be honored posthumously at the NEA Jazz Masters Awards in April, met Donnay many years ago at The Hooker's Ball in San Francisco and they struck a fast friendship and musical connection. In fact, an EP album featuring the two is due out in 2019.
The show starts at 5:30 p.m. For ticket information, go to www.birdlandjazz.com.
A versatile performer with a wide range of platforms, Donnay has written, produced and sang songs that have appeared on television ("One Life to Live," "All My Children," "The Young & The Restless" and "Nash Bridges," among others) and motion pictures or documentaries ("Pie Lady of Pie Town," "Journey of the Universe," "Doing Life" and "Reservoirs Of Strength"). She also sang with Dan Hicks on "Last of the Great Record Stores" movie.
"My Heart Belongs to Satchmo" is Donnay's ninth CD (now signed to Blujazz), a tribute to Louis Armstrong with her group, the Prohibition Mob. Her interest in roots music was inspired from the radio, performing with Dick Oxtot's Golden Age Jazz Band, recording with legendary jazz producer Orrin Keepnews, researching lost and obscure material from the Jazz Age, and touring 12 years.
As a songwriter and performer, Donnay has won awards including ASCAP Composer Awards, Top Solo Indie Artist in Performing Songwriter Magazine, one of the Best Albums in DownBeat Magazine, and International Film Music Award.
As a singer and performer, Donnay has opened for, or performed with, George Benson, Bob Dorough, David Grisman, Bela Fleck, John Hammond, Dr. John, Christian McBride, Maria Muldaur, Lewis Nash, Joe Sample, David Sanborn, Leon Russell, Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Lee Ritenour, Booker T. Jones, Tuck & Patti and many more.
