The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and RKO Stage present the world premiere of Carefree: Dancin' with Fred & Ginger, an all-new tribute to American cinema's most iconic pair, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Tony Award-winner Warren Carlyle directs and choreographs this original musical spectacular.

The production opens a tryout tour at NJPAC's Victoria Theater tonight and tomorrow, November 4 and 5, at 7:30pm, then moves to Princeton's McCarter Theatre Center on November 6. The tour continues throughout the Northeast with stops in Wilkes-Barre, PA; New London, CT; and Poughkeepsie, NY. A national tour is planned for 2017.

Leading the cast in this homage to the greatest dance duo of Tinseltown's golden era is Jared Grimes (2014 Fred & Adele Astaire Award for best male dancer in Broadway's After Midnight), Hayley Podschun (Something Rotten!, Hairspray, Chaplin) with special guest appearance by Broadway legend Donna McKechnie (Tony Award winner for A Chorus Line). The cast also features David Elder (Curtains, 42nd Street, Titanic, Kiss Me, Kate), Drew King (On the Twentieth Century) and Tessa Grady (Dames at Sea, Cinderella).

The design team includes Alexander V. Nichols (scenic/lighting/projection design), Matt Kraus (sound design) and Amy Clark (costume design).

A live onstage band will strike up American Songbook favorites by composers such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and the Gershwins, who found a new avenue for their music in the cinema with classic songs including "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Cheek to Cheek," "I Won't Dance," and "The Way You Look Tonight."

Carlyle - the Tony Award-winning dancemaker of After Midnight - collaborated with book writer Peter Duchan (off-Broadway's Dogfight), combining more than two dozen show-stopping numbers from RKO's catalog to create a fizzy cocktail of live music with state-of-the-art digital projections and floor-splintering tapping.

"The sheer beauty that Fred and Ginger brought to the screen was an antidote for the anguish endured by America during the 1930s," says NJPAC President and CEO John Schreiber. "But when it comes to lifting sprits, their healing powers are still just as effective."

TEd Hartley, RKO Stage CEO and Lead Creative Producer, says, "Carefree: Dancin' with Fred & Ginger promises a magical evening that will delight audiences of all ages."

Tickets, priced from $65 to $85, are available online at njpac.org; by calling 1.888.GO.NJPAC (888.466.5722); or visiting the NJPAC Box Office at One Center Street.
