Cameron Schmitz's most recent series of paintings and drawings is inspired by the Brattleboro Retreat Trails and back roads of Vermont. These new paintings and drawings illustrate her interest in an energetic use of mark making, color and movement. Rhythmic dashes of paint, graphic lines and painterly strokes evoke a meditative and embodied sense of place, both familiar and dreamlike.
"The paths that I take in my art reflect both my desire and appreciation for growth, inquiry and trust. I have come to understand that we as a people and as part of the natural world are continually in flux. We are forever moving and evolving mentally, emotionally, physiologically, and even physically. As we move, we exude and expend energy while simultaneously receiving the energy from others and our environments. When I walk through the forest or along the quite road and study my natural surroundings, I see that these places possess a life and set of energies that are shared."
Cameron received her MFA in painting from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and BFA in painting and drawing from the University of New Hampshire, in addition to studying at Studio Art Centers International, Florence, Italy. Since 2007 she has been actively exhibiting her work throughout New England and beyond. She also teaches studio art at the high school and post-secondary levels.
Cameron with the Jackson Gallery will be donating 20% of sales from this exhibit to the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund to help Vermonters impacted by the recent devastation.
