Cheyenne Jackson has been cast as the aristocratic Charles Darnay in the Broadway-bound musical A Tale of Two Cities; he will perform alongside James Barbour as Sydney Carton in two workshop presentations of the show on September 29th and 30th.

A Tale of Two Cities, which is based on the Charles Dickens novel, received a New York workshop in August, and will open in Chicago on
February 9th; the show will play the Chicago Theatre. However, original director/choreographer David H. Bell left the project due to "immediate personal problems," and that date is subject to change; a new director has not yet been announced. The pop opera is scheduled to begin Broadway previews on April 11th and open on April 27th. A theatre has also not yet been selected, though the production will cost the producers at least $14 million.

The show, which has long been in gestation, features a book, lyrics and music by
Jill Santoriello. "Set against the epic backdrop of the French Revolution and based on the classic Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities is a sweeping musical about injustice, vengeance and the redemptive power of love. When Dr. Manette is released from the French Bastille after 17 years, he must be resurrected from the brink of madness by his daughter, Lucie. In England they meet two very different men: the exiled French aristocrat, Charles Darnay, whom Lucie marries, and the drunken cynic, Sydney Carton. Soon family secrets and political intrigue combine to draw Lucie and her family back to Paris. At the height of the Reign of Terror, the musical finds an unlikely hero in Carton, inspired by love to make an extraordinary sacrifice," as the show is described in concert notes from last year.

Jackson's previous Broadway credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie and Aida (as a standby for Radames). He was among the premiere cast of Altar Boyz, is a member of the Broadway Inspirational Voices, and has appeared regionally in West Side Story, The Most Happy Fella, Children of Eden, Hair, Carousel, Damn Yankees and Kismet.

Barbour previously appeared as Sydney in a summer
2004 concert production that was mounted at off-Broadway's Little Shubert Theatre; it also starred Jenny Powers as Lucie Manette and Gavin Creel as Charles Darnay. Barbour's previous Broadway credits include Assassins, Urinetown, Jane Eyre, Beauty and the Beast, Carousel and Cyrano--The Musical.
