J Chen Project Presents BEFORE YOU FLY As Part of 2018 NYC Season Program ImageJ CHEN PROJECT'S 2018 NYC Season Program includes the World Premiere of "Before You Fly", along with a curated repertoire of our dances throughout the past decade.

Before You Fly

"The World of Humanity is Possessed of Two Wings: The Male and The Female. So Long as These Two Wings are Not Equivalent in Strength, The Bird Will Not Fly." - Abdul Baha

"Before You Fly" explores our transformative time in society. With the emergence of the feminine power and emotional intelligence, Chen strives to explore a paradigm shift in how we view power, strength and courage. Are we brave enough to be vulnerable? Are we strong enough to be sensitive? Are we confident enough to listen?

This work is set to a newly composed score by Chris DeAngelis and danced with original costumes by Keiko Voltaire.

J CHEN PROJECT, formed in 2008, is a modern dance company based in New York City. Under the Artistic Direction of Jessica Chen, JCP explores how we perceive and create identities within the collective human experience through innovative and culturally-based dance works. In her new work Chen is taking the next step and a look at the feminine power.

JCP is an official 501c3 non-profit organization. Over the past 10 Years, JCP has given scholarships to over 20 pre-professional dancers to participate in our Mentorship Program and partnered with Dixon Place to produce an annual Choreographers' Festival that has presented nearly 60 emerging to mid-career choreographers. The company has also received commissions to teach and perform at 28 universities and performing arts venues across the U.S.

In 2013, Chen made a miraculous journey back to the stage after suffering a horrific car accident, which rendered her in a coma for 13 days after 8 hours of brain surgery. She shares her story and fight to live through her work as a choreographer, speaker, and Artistic Director of J CHEN PROJECT. Chen uses movement as a vehicle to heal wounds, share stories and better understand our human existence.
