FOX's live broadcast of GREASE: LIVE made TV history this year by collecting a total of 10 Emmy nominations- the most nominations ever received for a live musical. With the Emmys approaching next month, Lin-Manuel Miranda just hosted a special panel to celebrate the show, featuring Thomas Kail (director), Alex Rudzinski (director), William Ivey Long (costumes), Bernie Telsey (casting), and Aaron Tveit (Danny Zuko).
What did they have to say about the experience these six months later? Below, check out some of the highlights of the conversation:
-Of David Korins' 21 sets, he used only three colors for each design.
-The cast rehearsed for a total of 52 days. Choreographer Zach Woodlee spent two weeks with dancers in November, then an additional three weeks with the T-birds and Pink Ladies in December. The rest of the company was added to the mix in the final two weeks leading up to the broadcast.
-The live broadcast was only the third time that the production was run with an audience and the fifth time it was run with all of the technical elements.
-The show used 650 live Audience members in total. Having a live audience was one of the first conversations that Kail had with producers when he became attached to the project.
-The car race scene took months to conceptualize. Rudzinski considered filming an actual car race on the streets of LA, as well as using miniature versions of the cars, before landing on the filming method they used in the broadcast.
-William Ivey Long reunited with Kiki Palmer (after working with her during Cinderella) for her epic, USO quick change, and was thrilled that they got to show off that magic in real time.
-Aaron Tveit relied on his experience of starring in the Les Miserables film to prepare for filming.
-The storytelling of the Hand Jive scene is one of the parts of the show of which Kail is proudest. Rudzinski estimates that there were 150 shots in the sequence that were rehearsed for weeks and weeks.
-Many easter eggs are hidden throughout the show- one of which being a punch bowl that was also used in the original film.
-Letting the company bow at the end was decided on very early on.
-If you look hard enough, you can spot Kail and executive producer Marc Platt on top of a truck in the final carnival scene.
