The Others is conceived and directed by Department of Theatre Arts professor Saviana Stanescu, and developed with a cast of theatre students. Spoken word poetry by cast member Jharrel Jerome is also featured. Themes of racial injustice, sexual abuse, bullying, and sexuality are explored in this social justice piece. Stanescu was inspired to create theatre that brought about social chance in response to present day issues and events recently seen on Ithaca College's campus, saying, "I realized that we need to explore these topics in a theatrical way with and for our students. After I proposed the project to our department, a crisis on our own campus emerged, ending with a vote of "no confidence" in the president of the college. It became imperative to use the devised theatre slot in our mainstage season to tackle such issues."
A script evolved out of improvisational exercises centering around these themes. Stanescu envisions a future for the piece on other college campuses, saying, "We started with just an idea/outline and now we have a show. Like any birth, developing new performative work is not an easy endeavor. But there is pride and love in it, and there is hope for its future."
