In honor of Women's History Month in March, The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan, is launching a 31-day celebration entitled "Salute To Women" in honor of women who have served our nation - both in military uniform and out - with a series of events designed to honor, educate and inspire the next generation of female leaders.
Despite the fact that not a single woman ever served aboard Intrepid during its active duty, Intrepid is serving as the focal point for Women's History Month events in March, including a series of themed weeks: Kickoff Week (March 1-5); Arts Week (March 6-12); Health and Fitness Week (March 13-19); Con Ed Science and Engineering Week (March 20-26); Business Week (March 27-31).
Key events throughout the month of events include:· Sunday, March 6: Book readings at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM:
o "Soar, Elinor" author Tami Lewis Brown tells the story of aviation pioneer and New Yorker Elinor Smith who earned her pilot's license in 1928 at age 16--the youngest person in history. Elinor flew under all four bridges spanning Manhattan's East River in her Waco-10 biplane as a teenager--a record that still stands.
· Saturday, March 12: Book reading at 12:00 PM:
o "Custard and Mustard" author Maureen Sullivan and illustrator Alison Josephs will lead readings and discuss their work, which focuses on New York City, its amusing characters and unique energy.
· Sunday, March 13: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM: Women's Health & Fitness Day sponsored by The Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure
o Includes interactive fitness demonstrations, activities and educational programs highlighting the importance of living a healthy lifestyle from some of New York's top fitness and health experts. Programming will include yoga and fitness classes, a blood drive, health screenings, and health and fitness companies with give-a-ways and incentives.
· Sunday, March 20: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM: "Girls in Science & Engineering Day"
o Includes demonstrations and activities about marine science and the Hudson River, and hands-on activities led by the New York City Center for Space Science Education, Rutgers School of Engineering and NYIT (New York Institute of Technology). Kids will be able to build their own bird to understand the science of flight and a boat to understand the science of flotation. A special exhibit called "Space Goggles" will let kids experience what it's like to see like an astronaut floating in space.
