Van Wezel, the beloved cultural institution in Sarasota, opened last week with a bang and has been delighting audiences ever since! With a jam-packed schedule, they are forging ahead gloriously. We recently had the opportunity to chat with their dedicated Executive Director, Mary Bensel, to learn about the incredible journey they underwent to achieve their ambitious goals, following the immense challenges faced after Hurricane Milton.

The famous motto "On with the Show" is truly fitting in the light of the challenges Mary and her dedicated team had to conquer to meet their deadline. Despite the possibility of missing all holidays with loved ones, the entire staff at the Van Wezel emerged victorious(and noone had to forgo their celebrations).

If one were unaware of the recent struggles, they would never suspect the past devastation. It's a testament to their perseverance and teamwork. Mary is now back in her beautifully adorned office, adorned with numerous awards, accolades, and mementos of her impactful leadership. Sarasota's season is in full swing, and we are all basking in the vibrant energy of the season along with her.

Mary mentioned there are a few behind-the-scenes projects that still need to be finished. One of the elevators backstage is currently out of order, among other small tasks. However, these projects will have to wait until next summer as Van Wezel is now busy hosting shows from around the world and providing top-notch entertainment for us here in Sarasota. “It’s been a period of adjustment and learning,” Mary says “and we are thrilled to be open and what a great way to start the New Year with a Bang.” She is obviously thrilled to be back in her offices, and back to the grindstone that is season at Van Wezel. It is not uncommon for them to not have  a show every single night of the week!

Mary proudly shares that although formal dinners are currently not an option, delightful light bites and exquisite cocktails still grace our presence. The splendid waterfront patio stands immaculately prepared for a splendid pre-event gathering under the majestic sunset. The absence of this picturesque setting during the closure of the renowned Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall was keenly felt. This distinguished establishment not only showcases the illustrious Broadway series but also serves as a gracious host to numerous local fundraising galas and other distinguished events. The closure resulted in the unfortunate cancellation of more than 40 events and 10 captivating shows, alongside the temporary pause of myriad educational initiatives such as enlightening Masterclass sessions.

In the world of theater, where endless possibilities unfold before our eyes, Mary emphasizes that the successful reopening of Van Wezel wouldn't have been feasible without the unwavering dedication of the staff from every department, including her own team and the support of the city. Despite the profound challenges faced during that tumultuous period, Mary acknowledges that compared to other regions that were significantly impacted, they were truly fortunate. "We are incredibly grateful," exclaims Mary with joy in her voice! Her sentiment resonates deeply, for the Sarasota community as a whole is truly blessed to have Van Wezel back in full swing, ready to delight audiences once again.
