Infinite Variety Productions and Colleen Britt (Claire's Room, 2006; Photosynthesis, 2009) return to the New York International Fringe Festival with newcomer Alla Ilyasova's lyrical tale of dark secrets, White guards, Young Leninists, Tsarist treasures, and lightning bugs.
Svetlyachki is a story about six orphans struggling to survive in a Russian village just after the Civil War. The ninety-minute drama (developed in part in The Actors Studio's Playwright-Director Workshop) is a tribute to those among us who are, too frequently, the most unnoticeable and unseen... who have the power in them to inspire the rest of us to (when the world grows dark) refuse to give up or give in, and learn to glow.
The production (led by Infinite Variety Productions and directed by Colleen Britt) will feature an elecrifying, young cast (Ross Alden, Julia Christgau, Stephanie Fagan, Jordan Gwiazdowski, Evan Sokal, Ken Urso) and an impressive team of veteran designers (Shawn Lewis, Daryl Bornstein, Janet Berka, Dani Blum, Katie Downey).
Infinite Variety Productions (IVP) is a New York City-based non-profit company whose mission is to spark public inquiry and social change by illuminating unknown stories from women's history. In its four years as a company, IVP has created significant impact across the country with their productions of Phylis Ravel's Censored on Final Approach (The Judson Theatre in New York; The Women In Military Service For America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery) and Shirley Lauro's A Piece Of My Heart (Washington, DC; Sheridan, Wyoming). Their most recent production, Sean Michael Welch's Insignificant, told the stories of the first female astronomers. www.infinitevarietynyc.org
Colleen Britt is IVP's Resident Director, having most recently directed IVP's Insignificant at the Kraine Theater. Last summer, she directed Sean Michael Welch's Utah and D.L. Siegel's Untouched (Wyoming Theatre Festival). Other credits include Censored on Final Approach (The Long Island Airpower Museum; The Judson Gym Theatre), Dead Bullies (NYU), Slipping on Black Ice (The Hudson Guild Theatre), Autobahn (Williamstown Theatre Festival Apprentice Program), and assisting Brian Roff (Berkshire Theatre Festival) on the world premiere of Dutch Masters by Greg Keller. www.colleenrbritt.com
