InVersion Theatre is excited to announce IN THE WOODS WE RETURN, presented in August 2015 as a part of FringeNYC.
IN THE WOODS WE RETURN is an ethereal drama that asks: what does it mean to know who you really are? Sun Hwa enters a cabin in the woods looking to get away from her life in the city - and from haunting past events - perhaps permanently. When she arrives, she meets Jack, the man who has been living there for some time. As they get to know each other, they challenge each other to not only explore the environment but also explore what they know about themselves.
A piece inspired in part by Ralph Waldo Emerson's Nature, IN THE WOODS WE RETURN takes the elements of spiritual satisfaction and oneness and putting them into a modern context, where they begin feeling less freeing and more sinister. As the characters begin to deal with changes to their memory and the specters of their previous partners, claustrophobia begins to set in for characters as they begin to question if they ever existed on the outside - or if, as Emerson suggests, they are nothing but a part of the environment they're trapped in.
IN THE WOODS WE RETURN marks the first FringeNYC production for writer Johnny Lloyd and director William Steinberger. Previously the two have collaborated on BORN, which won the Kelly Writers House Playwriting Fellowship in 2011. In addition, Lloyd and Steinberger have produced several pieces as InVersion Theatre, including two pieces in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. IN THE WOODS WE RETURN marks InVersion's NYC debut. The piece stars Katie Lee Hill*, recently seen in CLAUDIO QUEST at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and FILM CHINOIS at Pan Asian Rep, and Keith Caram. Hill appears in agreement with Actor's Equity Association.
IN THE WOODS WE RETURN is directed by InVersion Artistic Director William Steinberger, with dramaturgy by Rebecca LeVine. Scenic Design by Anthony Freitas, Costume Design by Tina McCartney, Sound Design by Chris Gurr. InVersion Theatre is a Philadelphia-born, New York-based theatre company established in 2011.
