Deadline reports that Idris Elba has signed on to star in BEAST OF NO NATION, a film adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala's bestselling novel of the same name.
Cary Fukunaga will helm the drama which centers on "the journey of a young boy, Agu, who, when civil war engulfs his West African country is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters. Not only must Agu face the death of his father and disappearance of his mother and sister, but must also join a life of violence and brutality. Agu befriends a mute boy named Strika and together they face the crimes and hardships of war."
Elba will take on the role of Commander. He will also be among the producers of the project.
The film and TV star appeared Off-Broadway in 2001's TROILUS & CRESSIDA. He is perhaps best known for his role as the calculating de facto leader of a Baltimore drug empire in HBO's critically acclaimed original series "The Wire." In 2005, he received an Image Award nomination for his work on the series. Also for HBO, Elba starred in the movie "Sometimes In April," from director Raoul Peck. Set during the Rwandan genocide of 1994, the movie marked his first film starring role. Elba played a Hutu soldier who tries to save his Tutsi wife and family, earning another Image Award nomination for his performance.Videos
