MOTEMA NIGHT featuring MALIKA ZARRA, ORAN ETKNI'S KELENIA & THE KOKO JONES BAND
Monday, June 13 at 9:30 PM; $12
On June 13th, the award-winning Harlem based imprint Motéma Music, noted for its adventurous international approach to jazz, presents an expansive evening of compelling music exploring new frontiers of world and jazz at Joe's Pub. The break-out Moroccan/jazz music star Malika Zarra, recently featured on Afropop Worldwide, PRI's The World and NPR's All Things Considered, will perform music from her extraordinary new Motéma release, Berber Taxi. Joining the triple bill is Oran Etkin's Kelenia, the noted Israeli/Malian jazz fusion group whose debut was named "Best World Beat CD of 2009" by the Independent Music Awards. And The Koko Jones Band will present a musically elevating blend of African, Latin and Soul grooves with vocals and percussion in their first official performance in Manhattan. The high-octane showcase is one of the many performances that will be taking place around New York City throughout the month of June as part of the 30th anniversary of the Blue Note Jazz Festival.

Born in Morocco, raised in France, and now thriving in the polyglot metropolis of New York City, MALIKA ZARRA is a gifted composer, producer and singer creating a new Moroccan urban-world-jazz by tastefully using traditional North African chaâbi, Berber and Gnawa polyrhythms to underpin her distinctly contemporary urban compositions, all the while maintaining a sophisticated improvisational modern jazz approach. The April release of Zarra's Motéma debut, Berber Taxi, positioned her as an important world-jazz artist on the New York, North African and European multicultural music scenes. Berber Taxi takes up its journey following Zarra's self-released 2006 debut, On the Ebony Road. John Zorn hails her "rare and special voice" and The Guardian writes "Zarra is captivating, with a soft voice and a hushed style of scat-singing that makes it sound like she is casting spells." Berber Taxi has been featured on WNYC-FM's Soundcheck and spinner.com and is establishing Zarra as one of the brightest new stars in world music.

ORAN ETKIN'S KELENIA is helmed by young instrumentalist Oran Etkin, hailed as a "great clarinetist" and "excellent improviser" by New York Time's jazz critic Ben Ratliff and as a "woodwind maestro" by Afropop Worldwide. His unique improvisations on the sax, clarinet and bass-clarinet have been featured on projects by artists as varied as Mike Stern, Wyclef Jean, Toumani Diabate and Lionel Loueke. Fusing years of experience in both the jazz and world music scenes, Etkin created his Kelenia ensemble in 2009 to bridge the sounds of his native Israel with the music of Mali and the modern jazz of New York. The band's eponymous Motéma 2009 debut, Kelenia, won "Best World Music Album" that year from the Independent Music Awards, and was later featured on a GRAMMY®-nominated compilation alongside tracks by Russell Simmons and Moby. For the Joe's Pub show Etkin is joined by Malian griot musicians Makane Kouyate (calabash/vocals) and Balla Kouyate (balafon) Through nearly a decade of work together Etkin and the Kouyate brothers have developed a seemingly telepathic musical connection on stage that bridges cultural boundaries and is a joy to experience.

THE KOKO JONES BAND will be making its New York City debut at Joe's Pub. Koko brings several lifetimes' worth of experience to the stage. Music is literally in her blood - her grandmother played piano with Bessie Smith - and she has led an uncommon life in music, including early initiations into traditional Congolese, West African and Latin hand drumming, which led to key positions with the LaRoque Bey Drummers and Tito Sompa's Tanawa Congolese Dance Company. Koko Jones, formerly known as Kevin ‘Bujo' Jones, has extensive professional world/soul and jazz credentials as a percussionist including multiple recordings and tours with The Isley Brothers in the 1980's as well as tours and recordings with such varied artists as Archie Shepp, Whitney Houston, Randy Weston, TK Blue and Winard Harper. A dedicated ambassador of uplift and compassion, Koko's performance will preview her new project "Who's That Lady," setting the Golden Age of Soul and Jazz against a pulsing backdrop of African and Caribbean Rhythms.

ABOUT MOTÉMA: Motéma Music, named for the word for ‘heart' in the Congolese language of Lingala, has been promoting recording artists of power and distinction since 2003. Founded by arts patrons and music professionals in the San Francisco Bay area and now based in Harlem, NYC, the label is home to a growing roster of recordings by award-winning artists including NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston, Jamaican jazz legend Monty Alexander, rising star vocalist Gregory Porter, and other jazz greats including Rufus Reid, Geri Allen, Lynne Arriale, and Marc Cary. Led by producer, performer and entrepreneur Jana Herzen and a dedicated team of veteran and new music industry professionals, Motéma provides career development, creative promotion, and marketing support to composer-performers who are masters at their craft and who have a unique and positive musical voice to share with the world.

Other Motema artists performing in the Blue Note Jazz Festival are Brazilian bass icon Nilson Matta and jazz guitar guru Roni Ben-Hur, who celebrate the May release of their Afro-Bossa-Bop collaboration, MOJAVE at the Kitano on June 17 & 18, and GRAMMY®-nominated vocalist Gregory Porter, who performs at the Highline Ballroom on June 5.

IAN MCLAGAN
Tuesday, June 14 at 7:30 PM; $15 in advance / $20 at the door

There is no other keyboardist in the history of rock & roll with a more stunning, voluminous résumé than Ian McLagan. He was the animating force behind The Faces & The Small Faces and has toured and recorded with: The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Taj Mahal, John Hiatt, David Lindley, Paul Westerberg, Billy Bragg and Patty Griffin, just to name a few. His Wurlitzer electric piano is heard on everything from "Stay With Me" by The Faces to the smash hit "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones, and Mac's trademark Hammond B-3 organ is featured on the Small Faces classic "Itchycoo Park' and Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" and "You Wear It Well".

AGNES OBEL

Tuesday, June 14 at 9:30 PM; $16

Feeling musically related to Roy Orbison, Agnes currently lives in Berlin and possesses the rare gift of a songbird's voice, bringing to mind Ane Brun, Joanna Newsom or even Ricki Lee Jones. Obel's music "brims with a barely concealed passion that has helped make her Quiet Riot in-the-heart album a huge European seller," says Time Magazine. On April 12, the internationally acclaimed songwriter/composer will release her debut album, Philharmonics in the U.S. on PIAS America.

EILEN JEWELL with special guest ZOE MUTH AND THE LOST HIGH ROLLERS

Wednesday, June 15 at 7:00 PM; $15

Boise-born and Boston-based, Eilen Jewell has quickly distinguished herself as one of the rising stars of a new generation of roots musicians. Her first two albums, Boundary County (self-released, 2006) and Letters from Sinners and Strangers (Signature Sounds, 2007) were astonishingly assured efforts, which matched Jewell's understated yet insightful songs with a rugged blend of Americana styles. They were met with a great deal of acclaim, with No Depression raving that "Jewell is showing she can wander with the best of them, and write riveting song-stories about her adventures along the way." Indicative of Jewell's strong following in Europe, The Word in the UK described her as "A voice of real distinction [that] manages to transcend some powerful influences and pierce the fog long enough for her own point of view to emerge."

On April 21, Signature Sounds will release Eilen Jewell's third album, Sea of Tears, a recording that fills in a vital, hitherto missing element of her musical persona. "Before I discovered Woody Guthrie and folk music," she explains, "I was listening to Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and, later on, the Animals and the Kinks. I love that stuff, and I love to play it." http://www.eilenjewell.com/

She's been called Seattle's Emmylou, and when you hear her sing it may be hard to believe she was born and raised in the Great Northwest. The combination of her inventive songwriting, true-blue twang, and rock solid country band, the Lost High Rollers, has led critics to call her one of the best up and coming interpreters of classic country music. Muth's lyrics reflect her deep love for the history behind the music and focus on the tried and true topics of everyday life: disappointment, lost love, and trying to make enough money to live on. Her songs, beautifully rendered vignettes filled with subtle wordplay that never fall simply into cleverness, but instead give us truths about our lives and relationships that are subtle and unflinching. Traces of her influences, from John Prine to the Louvin Brothers and Lucinda Williams are evident, but her songs are hardly derivative. Muth has a knack for writing songs so true and familiar you feel as if they've been around forever, if she keeps writing them like this, they will be.

ANDREW VLADECK: RECORD RELEASE & BOOK LAUNCH

Wednesday, June 15 at 9:30 PM; $12
"The perfect blend of Midwestern thoughtfulness and New Yorker gruff. Some have even compared his post-Americana rock to the Boss. Yowza." - The L Magazine (NYC)

"Blue-collar folk music from New York City. I simply love it when a young artist takes an old musical genre and blows the dust off; fiddles about with the mechanics and makes it their own. Andrew Vladeck wears his influences on his sleeve and regular Maverick readers will easily spot Dylan, Van Zandt, Cohen and even ‘Nebraska'-era Springsteen in the mix on THE WHEEL but Andrew Vladeck has thrown all of these ingredients into the air and added a good dose of cayenne pepper to come up with his own intriguing fusion of modern and classic folk music." - Maverick (UK)

Some of New York Singer-Songwriter Andrew Vladeck's musical contributions are best known via his other bands, The Honey Brothers and Balthrop, Alabama, but Vladeck's new solo EP and its companion book signal his turn towards literary, alt-folk traditions. Coming on the heels of 2008's The Wheel, Vladeck will be wrapping up solo tours of US and Europe with a performance at Joe's Pub on June 15.

Andrew Vladeck's music mixes the modern and the historical, the urban fold and Americana. After an unusual career as a New York City Park Ranger, the native-born multi-instrumentalist walked out of Central Park to play a lot more music. On his upcoming EP, Passing Knowledge (End Up/Sonic Rendezvous), he balances spirited, lyrical-driven songs with finger-style instrumentation, deft wit, and some freewheeling fun. This recording signals a new direction for Vladeck, one in which he combines his strengths: his virtuosic handle on traditional folk music, and his award-winning songwriting (first place in the International Songwriting Competition, judged by Tom Waits and BrIan Wilson). Andrew is joined on this record by Lauren Balthrop, Colette Alexander and others NYC friends. Andrew was featured on BBC's The World, and was voted NYC Artist of the Month in The Deli Magazine.

J.D. SOUTHER with special guest Jill AndreWS

Thursday, June 16 at 7:00 PM; $20

One of the principal architects of the Southern California country-rock sound, Souther famously played a key role in the formation of the Eagles and co-wrote their hits "Heartache Tonight," "Victim of Love," "New Kid In Town," and "Best of My Love," as well as writing Linda Ronstadt's classics "Faithless Love," "Simple Man, Simple Dream," and Prisoner in Disguise."

A highly sought-after songwriter and session man, Souther also released three critically acclaimed solo albums -- "John David Souther," (1972) "Black Rose," (1976), and "You're Only Lonely" (1979) -- and two albums as a member of The Souther Hillman Furay Band, the supergroup which united Souther with Poco's Richie Furay and the Byrds' Chris Hillman.

But in 1985, after countless hit records, Grammy nominations, American Music Awards, and gold and platinum albums, J.D. Souther decided to walk away from his solo career. According to Souther: "I just wanted to be a good songwriter. I wanted to just stay home and write."

Relocating to Nashville, Souther wrote for and with artists as diverse as India.Arie, Brooks & Dunn, Jimmy Buffet, Glen Campbell, Joe Cocker, Crosby Stills & Nash, Diamond Rio, Dixie Chicks, Don Henley, One Flew South, Roy Orbison, Bernadette Peters, Bonnie Raitt, George Strait, BrIan Wilson, Trisha Yearwood, Warren Zevon, and most recently the newly re-formed Eagles, who chose Souther's protest song "How Long" as the debut single from their first studio album in twenty-eight years.

And now -- following the release of the 18-track BORDER TOWN: THE VERY BEST OF J.D. SOUTHER -- Souther returns with his first studio album in twenty-five years: IF THE WORLD WAS YOU.

The Knoxville-basEd Andrews crafts beguiling, startlingly intimate songs that merge her voice with her effortless, classic-pop sensibility and keen eye for human drama-all the unspoken truths between lovers, devastating confessions whispered to friends, silent prayers offered up during the longest, loneliest nights. A smart, subtle tunesmith and a gently wise songwriter, Andrews' songs shuffle in and settle down with little fanfare, then quietly go about the business of ripping your heart straight out of your chest.

And her full-length debut, The Mirror out June, 7th, is the perfect introduction to her ever-deepening talents and charms. http://www.jillandrews.com/

ERIK FRIEDLANDER: BONEBRIDGE CD RELEASE
Thursday, June 16 at 9:30 PM; $14
Come and join us to celebrate the release of Erik Friedlander's latest CD, "Bonebridge"
Bonebridge is cellist Erik Friedlander's new band and it turns to the American South for inspiration. Taking a cue from his teenage passion for The Allman Brothers Band and Johnny Winter, Friedlander brought in slide-guitar player and Memphis native Doug Wamble to share the front line of this new quartet. The music, which blends Southern rock with Erik's New York edge, is inspired by the chemistry between the cello and the slide guitar--the two instruments are kindred spirits when played in this fresh new context. Wamble joins a honed unit as Friedlander, Mike Sarin (drums) and Trevor Dunn (bass) have played together in New York City for years, most recently in the Broken Arm Trio.

"It's an Americana at once familiar, yet unlike anything heard before, as the musician coaxes his cello into the aural shape of banjos and finger-picked guitars: a truly astounding set." -- Jo-Ann Green, All Music Guide

" Block Ice & Propane is a haunting, sprawling, majestic piece of Americana." --FrEd Kaplan, Stereophile, August 28, 2007

"Erik Friedlander can do things with a cello that should have a reasonable listener fearing for her life," says PitchforkMedia.com, "Rostropovich one second and Rottweiler the next."
